Epic Win: Legends of the Hidden Temple

once upon a win

Submitted by Megan K

Yes! Another epic Nickelodeon show! Olmec (the giant talking head) commands you to retrieve whatever the special-of-the-day legendary artifact and bring it to him! Then you had to cross the moat, answer some questions and then do all the physical challenges and run through the temple, looking out for sentinels that would steal your pendants.

  1. Blah says:

HELL YES. This was and will continue to be an epic win.

  2. Kelly says:

    HEEEEEEELLS YEAAAAAAAH!

    wait? levitating dog leash?

  3. epicness says:

total awesomeness right there. i survived history class b/c of that show lol. definite epic win.

  4. Sarah says:

I freaking loved this show! I wanted to be on it really badly. It annoyed me though that no one seemed to be able to put the monkey together correctly.

  5. Brad says:

Someone been reading Dr. McNinja today?

  6. Me says:

    ZOMG A PERSONAL CD PLAYER!!!!111

  7. THAT guy says:

2-3 years ago I would sit around the chapter room of my fratenity house with some of the other brothers and when this show would come on the big screen tv, we would take bets off the start as to which “team” would win.

Never had so much fun with a dollar bet.

On a simmilar note, I miss double dare.

  8. Lilly says:

Whenever my brother and I were crawling around in the woods, we’d always go, “We’re practicing for Legends of the Hidden Temple and we’re totally gonna be the Silver Snakes!”

And when I grew up, this was one of the ways to determine who got to use the jackhammer for the day–who could name all of the teams on Legends of the Hidden Temple correctly? Whoever lost got the jackhammer and couldn’t leave their post until lunch. XD

  9. sk says:

I think I may be too old for this one (I was a DD kid). What’s up with 3 minutes of explanation from the creepy talking statue????

    • Allison says:

      I totally agree!
I was slightly too old for this.

    • Athanar says:

After the legend explanation, the 4 teams that survived the first challenge (cross the moat, it was always in different ways) had to answer questions to move down the steps. After 2 teams reached the bottom, they moved on to the next part.

  10. daytona says:

I watched this show just about every day when I was a kid. Loved it.

  11. remolay says:

As much as I agree with that I have to say the thing that caught my eye was the beginning.

Nick GAS still exists? I thought they got rid of that channel when they started doing The N All day

  12. remolay says:

at least that guy could do the shrine.

He pulled an indy there too I see

  13. Wesker says:

MEMORIES!!!! They are attacking me!!!! ( Silver Snakes FTW)!!!

  14. I_Love_Jim_Henson says:

    OLMEC FOR THE WIN!!!!

    • CheekyCherry says:

Agreed. His voice was epic. I can’t help but mimic him every time I say “very well!”

      • bibliotechnique says:

I always loved it when the host would say, “Are you ready, Olmec?”, and he would
        reply, “Let’s rock!” FTW!!

  15. Blawb says:

    wth, never heard of this…….

  16. Athanar says:

    Red Jaguars and Orange Iguanas.

  17. Of course!! I remember watching this in Spanish!

  18. NERDYCHICK says:

My favorites were (are) the silver snakes and the purple parrots.
This show kicks ass!!! I still watch it a lot.
God, those temple guards still kinda freak me out…xD

  19. miroku says:

    Silver Snakes FTW!

This show kicked so much ass. Recently they reran a few episodes, and it help up surprisingly well. I was also shocked to find out Dee Baker has done other voice work. He has quite the range. But really if he just did his Olmec voice it would still own.

  20. PQgirl89 says:

Careful with that stupid Shrine of the Silver Monkey…kids could NEVER put that thing together.

  21. Codie says:

God this show was sooooo awesome!!! i used to have nightmares as a little kid bout the temple guards and they still freak me out….. ><

  22. Ragtatter says:

My grandmother actually forbid me from watching this show because I would shriek at the morons with the monkey statue at the top of my lungs.

“IT’S ONLY THREE PIECES! THE HEAD GOES ON TOP! ON TOP YOU MORON! NOOOO! YOU HAVE IT UPSIDE DOWN!”

I’d also rage at the guys who went into the ball-pit room. There was ALWAYS a guard in the ball pit.

    • jjmblue7 says:

I am reminded of Futurama: “Aha! The hat goes on the head! It’s so obvious now!” …or something like that.

      • cereal says:

Wasn’t that on Chowder? “Aha! The spoon goes IN the spoon drawer! It’s so
obvi… what were we talking about?”

      • Mad Ness Monster says:

The “Futurama” line is absolutely a dig at this show, seeing as it was a monkey who was having problems with the hat.

    • pezcore says:

YES! That and the damn room where you had to do the poses on the wall.
Or I’m confusing that with the tree room.

said Friend’s mom came into the room to watch us yell at the kids. Apparently it’s amusing to watch two 20somethings shout at kids about how they are not taking the proper route.

  23. Ninth Man says:

I loved this show! Whoever the 70 people who clicked thumbs-down on this should be ashamed of themselves…this was an awesome show. You want to know why kids nowadays are obese? They dont have awesome game shows that require physical work to win. We had Guts, Double Dare, Legends, and more!

    • Wesker says:

Don’t forget about that Camp Scare one, I loved that one

    • Iron Chariot says:

Damn right! How many kids did you know who kept in shape because they were “training to win a Nick game show?” I know I was one of them. Legends was my absolute favorite, followed closely by Guts.

  24. SS says:

I lovee(d) this show!! I always wanted to go on it so I could win the “cool” prizes. It’s on Nick GAS and I showed it to my younger cousins and they thought this was the best show ever, and I thought the prizes were so lame..haha ahhh i miss the 90’s

  25. in_a_box says:

So, this is basically America’s version of “A*mazing” ?

  26. Ginny says:

Wow, totally missed this one–what was the year this originally aired in?

    • RightOnTime says:

It was back in the ’90’s. It’s kind of like Kid’s Jeopardy meets a fear of “spooky” Indians with a bunch of fake folklore and some running and jumping. It was pretty good at first, but got a little boring as they exploited the same 4 plot lines day after day. (The show was on either everyday or a few times a week)

  27. Lilly says:

Mine was always the Green Monkeys. My brother’s was the Silver Snakes and we’d have many a long argument over who was cooler. XD

  28. RankMyTyping says:

    I just found out Olmec wasn’t real….. :(

  29. Skaboosh says:

    Silver Snakes for the win!

  30. utaduta says:

i only watched this while babysitting, i was a bit to old. yet i still realy wanted to be on it! haha! i want a dope N64 or a awesome CD player!

  31. Jen says:

I loved this show! I would invariably get in trouble for attempting to reenact some of the obstacles in the living room, but it was a good time. My sister and I would stay up late just to watch this show. :)

  32. Draglon says:

Go kid. Dog leash rop grappling FTW. Woot

  33. Mione says:

THIS! This is the show I always tried to remember, but never could put my finger on it. Love it, miss it.

  34. miroku says:

I remember when one of the prizes was a CD-I. Man how lame of a prize?

  35. Tommy says:

Oh man.. I’m glad someone finally posted this. When the site first started I hoped someone would post it, I had forgotten the name of the show. This show was so awesome… I always got so excited watching it, and wanted to go through a maze like that at the end.

  36. Bullseye says:

Too bad Nickelodeon doesn’t make shows like this anymore… Legends of the Hidden Temple, Global Guts (with the AGRO CRAG!!) and Double Dare were just great.

  37. OnTheFence says:

This show was awesome. Too bad every show was pretty much the same. The obstacle course never changed. Also the daily “object of interest” was always crap that was probably in someone’s garage that was spray painted gold.

“Olmec wants you to retrieve the magic axe handle so the ghosts of the Inca’s don’t come back”

Good, but the show gets old and tired quickly

And I do agree about how funny Nickolodeon’s GAS is…

    • Stick says:

It did change but not as often as it should have.

Considering that Nick is a children’s network (mostly) I’m not surprised about it being called GAS.

It’s funny how many game shows I wanted to be on back then. This, Double Dare, Finder’s Keepers, GUTS, What Would You Do?…..the list goes on.

  38. OnTheFence says:

It always seemed like the prizes were used…

  39. crazykanga says:

Omg! I LOVED this show growing up! I never could understand why no one ever got the monkey right, but I did love the way Olmec said “the shrine of the sliver monkey.” My least favorite room was the one with the creepy trees or whatever, a temple guard ALWAYS hung out there. Always loved planning out my own route through the course and yelling at the kids whenever they took the long way around.

Silver Snakes are of teh awesome! Along with the Purple Parrots!

  40. jjmblue7 says:

I always wanted a room full of bungee cords strung in all directions because of this show. It would have been so much fun to play in, or should i say “will be once I can fund it”?

  41. arcade419 says:

I used to be so afraid of that creepy tiki dude that caught the players in the maze. He was freaky looking! But the show was awesome and the questions were kind of hard. lol

  42. ninjaotter says:

This show was the bomb. I watched it religiously until the day my parents canceled our cable. Never had static been so depressing.

And man, in retrospect those prizes were pretty lame. Though I’m positive I would have killed to go to SpaceCamp at the time.

  43. T.R. says:

Hell Yass. That show was awesome, I remember yelling at the TV every time it was on.

The kids on it could never figure out how to put the little stone monkey together at the end tho. That always frustrated me.

  44. I heard the kids who were on the show that lost were sent to work in shoe factories in China… Don’t mess with Olmac!!! … or that Jeff Probst looking guy.

  45. Ray says:

I just saw a guy wearing a green monkey shirt today :3

  46. KyrieEleison says:

HOLY CRAP YES. Olmec owns all, Kirk was a doofus, and the Silver Snakes were the most awesome team, although Green had more wins (I spent a summer so completely bored that I worked out the winning percentages.)

Back when Nick GAS was still on the air, my sister and I would watch this religiously (my way of making sure that she knew what shows were epic and which were crap). I even had so much fun that I created a drinking game for it. Now if I could just find the file…

  47. Captain Ganny says:

I found out in my biohistory class that the Olmec was a tribe that pre-dated the Maya in Mexico, and they made statues like that…
I lol’d out loud when my professor started talking about it. Who knew Nick based things on real history? What a novel concept..

    • KyrieEleison says:

The funny thing is that “Legends” took place in an Aztec temple, with Mayan temple guards, and the whole thing starred an Olmec stone head.

Since those tribes had little to nothing to do with each other, it’s nice to know Nick did their homework. Not that it detracts from the sheer awesomeness that is “Legends.”

  48. Loctai says:

What was that show on Nick that was also kind of… legend themed.. but you had to do all these games and puzzles in front of a green screen to win?

  49. Loctai says:

eg, riding a flying carpet and ducking stuff?

  50. Nick says:

I grew up watching this show in the 90’s. I’m a history buff. It’s the definition of an Epic Win!

  51. Deusabscondidum says:

I loved this show so much! I always wanted to be on it.

  52. Cattitude says:

My brother and I used to watch this show all the time. We loved it, especially the questions section. I too always wanted to be on it, alas my wish went ungranted.

  53. Frank says:

Man, I loved this show when I was younger. I would always wish that I could be on it and run through that obstacle course at the end; it just looked so fun! Of course, I knew that wouldn’t happen, but this was still my favorite out of all of Nickelodeon’s game shows.

  54. Kaosi says:

HOLY CRAP! This show was frakking awesome. I would try to watch it no matter WHAT.

  55. krindle says:

For the longest time, I thought “Olmec” was “Old Mac.” I was so confused.

  56. sevin says:

    WHOA!

    I loved that show…
    As well as the following:
-Are You Afraid of The Dark?
    -Dinosaurs
    -Guts
    -Double Dare
    -Salute Your Shorts

    …and several cartoons as well.

You can still catch some of the toons on Nicktoons Network, by the way

  57. Andi says:

I remember one episode a kid completely nailed the Temple, came back with his pendant and at least 1 minute to spare.

sevin, you want AYAOTD? There are several episodes posted on youTube, you just have to kinda fish through them to get the right order since they’re all in three parts.

  58. Dark Storm says:

Dude, that giant talking head always scared the crrap out of me lol. But other than that it was a good show

  59. Suzu88 says:

I loved this show growing up, the temple guards always made me jump and still do.. I love the Purple Parrots and Blue Barracudas and always will :3 FTW!

  60. Inujosha says:

Best show ever! The only other show that came close was Nickalodeon Guts

  61. i-swoon-for-thee says:

this show is still on its a channel called nick gas they have shows like this and double dare too! but direct tv doesnt have that channel : [

  62. cereal says:

God, those prizes were always horrible. COME IN SECOND AND YOU GET A YEARS WORTH OF TUNA!

Unrelated: In the vid, at 6:22, his flick of the wrist move is awesome.

  63. Mad Ness Monster says:

I just remember one recent Thanksgiving where my cousins and I got into a heated argument over what the team names were. I tried to calmly explain that they were all animals that figured prominently in South American art and folklore and then I listed them (correctly) – and they still didn’t believe me. <:(

  64. Robin Gurl says:

I loved this show! ^_^ Whoever gave it thumbs down are probably just lazy fat obese kids who never did anything. I used to want to be on the game show so badly and win! :D

  65. Anonymous says:

this video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by viacom international inc…..no wonder viacom is struggling

  66. Sarhii says:

I was so suprised when I saw re-runs of this on Nick…which they no longer play but that show was so epic. Nick has really gone down hill in the last few years. Where are all the good shows like this one “are you afraid of the dark” “Angry Beavers” “rocko’s modern life” “invader zim” and all the others that they canceled before their time!

  67. Zero says:

Amazing show. I always wanted to be on this and Nick Arcade when I was little :D D

  68. ari says:

I LOVED this show when I was a kid! I was always a Purple Parrot, all the way! My little sister loved the Blue Barracudas, and my older sister (8 years older, but she still totally watched the show with us everyday) was a Silver Snake girl. We would argue over who was the best — we still do. :P

I so wanted to be on the show, but all the prizes seemed really lame to me, even then. I never wanted any of the stuff they offered, except maybe the trips. I read somewhere that almost every single team failed the temple run, though, and so hardly anybody got the trip.

This was apart of our daily line-up as children… Legends of the Hidden Temple, Wild and Crazy Kids (does anybody remember Wild and Crazy Kids?) and Are You Afraid of the Dark? which we would then rate based on scariest to least scary.

Oh man, I loved being a kid.

  69. Holly says:

I loved this show..I remember the prize pack was always a Neo Geo and I wanted one badly, that’s the only time I ever saw one advertised in the US!

  70. Anna says:

Like, 2 or 3 years ago they showed that show from 7-8 o clock in the mornin’, for like 1 months.

  71. FlonkertonChamp says:

it always bugged the crap out of me when kids couldn’t put together the shrine of the silver monkey. seriously. how hard is it to put together a 3-piece figurine?!

  72. pawdua says:

It’s still own, the kids are still as dumb and my son watched this obessesively when it was own, and it drives me nuts. Mainly becuaw Nick, like most Kid’s channels run any slightly successful show at least five times a day. And the DVR constantly records them. We keep having to set his shows manually or the damn thing will record 5 episode and we only let him keep one. Plus every time you want to watch something its recording some kiddy show.
