Epic Win: Excite Bike

Submitted by Julie D

One of the best NES games of all times! Excitebike provided many children with more hours of gameplay than any of those fancy-pants RPG’s or shooters they have now. And after you were done beating it and challenging all your friends, you could also build your own maps, which provided even more entertainment.

    Awesome game

  2. Anonymous says:

i remember nintendo from their arcade games…boxing so f’d me up but excitebike was amazing…my friend used to destroy it…atari person myself but that was my arcade memories anyway…
now there’s a nostalgic win: ARCADES!!! oh how my allowance was eaten up…

  3. Stick says:

Even the update of this game, Excite Bike 64, was great.

  4. Lisbeth says:

OH MAN. I loved this game. loved loved loved loved loved. When I worked at Walmart changing oil the guys and I used to sing the theme song out loud randomly. Man, the memories.

    • Maugchief says:

Such an earworm. Now that’s gonna be stuck with me for the rest of the day. You just had to mention it, didn’t you?

  5. Drew says:

I played this game (along with RC Pro Am) on the daily. I remember building my own track, and it was just seventy of those crazy tall jumps with the long platform on top. Thinking about it now, it was probably the most annoying track to play, but man… good times.

  6. Chass says:

Oh man, I used to gun the gas and overheat so bad whenever I played *facepalm*

  7. Ink Dragon says:

Try the wii’s virtual console… You can get Excitebike for like 5 bucks

    • RankMyTyping says:

I hear the intrawebs has it for ‘free’ also!

      • yaynintendo says:

I hear the pirates have it for “illegal” too!

      • Wyde says:

There’s a great, free version on Newgrounds with “Raceing,” “Endless,” and “Daredevil” modes. I don’t know if the music in it is from the original game or not, but it’s even catchier than what’s in the video. Search for “Excitebike” on newgrounds.com or “Excitebike Newgrounds” on Google. Endless gets very fun as you go higher and higher… and higher… and higher…

    • Kristen says:

I bought this on the Wii too! My brother and I loved “making” a track but not putting anything on it, and when we’d play, we’d try to knock all the other racers over. Especially the green one because he was annoying.

  8. Allison says:

    Love it.
We still have the NES and Excitebike is my 7yo’s favorite game!

    • Erm says:

I’ve got my NES somewhere, and about twenty or thirty cartridges, but once I have kids, I’ll probably hook up an emulator and controller set to the TV rather than clean those *&^%*$ edgeboard connectors.

I remember MicroMachines put out this great four-player racing game for the SNES. My whole family got into that one, and we played regularly.

  9. JayPea says:

Ah, good times! I played this with my nephew and my kids. Ever been beaten by a 4-year-old? Regularly? Yeah, I was hopeless, but we had fun.

  10. craspyjoe says:

Dude! please tell me they ported this to the DS

  11. Some_guy says:

I’ll be humming that theme song all week.

The best part of this game was the make-your-own-track thing.

Thinking about it, actually being able to save data was pretty rare back then.

  12. Crystal says:

I loved this game when I was younger. And the make-your-own-track was awesome…I loaded mine up with the big jumps!

    • Stick says:

Yeah. Whatever game I played that allowed you to make your own track, I would just fill it with jumps and flips.

  13. ascatal says:

awesome game , and my nemisis , i have never been able to fully beat it

  14. RankMyTyping says:

Ahhhh my dentist as a kid has this arcade machine. This takes me back!

  15. Lefty says:

I loved this game. The computer couldn’t beat me once I found out that you crash if your front tire hits another person’s back tire but they don’t. I just crept up next to one of the computer players and then switched lanes to make their front tire hit my back, and I just rode off smiling.

  16. Sabalon says:

My friend and I used to ride up to some gas station that had this game. Never bought anything there, but pumped tons of quarters into the machine.

  17. the first xtreme bike game ever!!

  18. Joei says:

Looking at that video I think they adapted the game for the Game Boy, I had a game Motocross Maniacs on there that was veeeery similar in the game play. LOVED that game!

  19. Wing Dairu says:

Worth remembering for sure. Sorry to say, though, Screwattack.com beat you guys to the punch in their Video Game Vault.

  20. KQy says:

Oh wow… I remember when I was a kid, the local Sears had a Nintendo with Excitebike in the middle of the clothes section so kids would play while their moms shopped… I loved making my own tracks and including every single ramp and obstacle possible. ^.^

  21. jnoble says:

I always found the random ‘thumbs up’ guy by himself on the side of the track that you pass every 5 seconds strangly amusing. And that this motocross takes place in an arena about 20 miles long.

  22. Vi31 says:

I also loved this game. Holy memories of sitting in my cousin’s room with my sister and him, playing this for hours on end, because my sister and I weren’t allowed to have an NES. Even the sounds of the jumping, moving from lane to lane, the winner’s cheer…whew.

  23. Terry says:

I remember making custom tracks out of nothing but those tiny little jumps all squished together. You could power through the whole race using nothing but the accelerate that overheated you, and you’d keep right on bouncing through the jumps until the overheat warning wore off.

  24. pjs says:

I swore there was even an Atari version of this. Not the console (2600 or 5200 or 7800), but the computers. (I had a 130XE.) Got mom or dad to take me to a local users group meeting at a library, swap some disks with people (remember 5-1/4″ floppies?), and got that game in one of the collections. Fun times!

Now who else remembers having Atari computers as a kid?
