Epic Win: The Blues Brothers

Submitted by T Smith
It seems we just can’t get away from John Candy, although he was only a supporting actor in The Blues Brothers.
Belushi and Akroyd were the real stars and they really made this movie awesome. Even though The Blues Brothers was chock-full of plenty of profanity and other things most “adults” would object to these days, for some reason this movie was wholesome and clean enough that most of our parents let us watch it. When is Hollywood going to return to the good old days of epic movies like The Blues Brothers?

It’s 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark, and we’re wearing sunglasses. Hit it!
yes, indeedy do! my favorite line! Not only did my hubby introduce this fine flick to me, but when our kids were old enough to ‘get it’, we watched with them and they loved it! It introduced my oldest to the finest music and she has expanded her musical horizons to include lots of other artists from these genres!
rock on that is one of the best movie lines ever and i say it all the time, especially before going to chicago, or getting on a roller coaster
best mission from god ever.
the real men in blacks!!!
What’s with the squished picture in the second clip?
I like to think that I spurred this epic win posting with my comment alluding to The Blues Brothers in the John Candy epic win posting. You’re welcome, everyone.
THANX!
WAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! EPIC EPIC EPIC WIN! I have loved this film for over 20 years! I pretty much know all the words and really annoy others by mouthing it when we are watching it!
Seriously, seriously brilliant.
I may or may not have named my two cats ‘Jake’ and ‘Elwood’…
Ooooh! Now I have to have two more cats!
I used to tell the old ladies at church I was on a “Mission from Gad” when I was little….
Mom didn’t think it was all that funny.
Your mother might not have appreciated it but it made me laugh out loud!
Best car chase ever!!!!!!
The parents who would have hissies about this movie now are the ones who watched it the most when they were teens. They’d probably have a heart attack if their little angels were exposed to Animal House.
Love this movie!
Hells. Yeah!
The most epic win of them all. I mean, when was there ever a movie with a more brilliant cast than this: James Brown, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Carrie Fisher, John Candy, Twiggy, Frank Oz, Steven Spielberg and John Landis – and those were just the bit parts!
Absolute awesomeness.
I think I’ll get the DVD out now and watch it again…
I love this movie! My dad always switches to it when it’s on TV. Such great music too!
Aretha Franklin’s scene rules. This, and “My Cousin Vinny” are movies you either love or hate. I <3….even though it’s really a collection of sketches tied together with a loose plot
It was a miracle it was allowed in a Catholic household, but luckily my parents had a sense of humor. Mission from Gad, PPG!
HAVE YOU SEEN THE LIGHT?!?!
This is such a coincidence. Dan Aykroyd is coming to the liquor store near my house Wednesday to autograph bottles of his wine. Dan was so admired by my dad that he would burst into songs from the movie drunk and sober. Even “Rubber Biscuit”.
It’s a shame I can’t give him a bottle of wine autographed by one of his heroes.
Here is the link to the wine event:

You lucky duck! I wish I could have you buy me one and ship it to CA. But MO is a long way. And I’ve no $$$ to go in person or to even buy a bottle! Oh well. If it is at all possible, please give him a hug from me and tell him I’m a fan from the Bay Area. (and if it isn’t, I totally understand). He had a very short-lived TV show a few years ago. They shoulda kept it on the air, it was awesome.
winniest win of all wins. uber win. win-o-rama. if win and win had a baby it would be called win and it would be this movie.
WIN!
not to mention OMG most quotable movie ever.
I saw this movie – in its original release – 27 times. This was back when I’d have to drive an hour to get to a movie theater… I even saw The Blues Brothers concert tour in 1980 and still have the T-shirt to prove it!
It introduced me to John Lee Hooker, Sam & Dave, Cab Calloway, and many other legends I’d never heard of growing up in the Midwest…
As for Blues Brothers 2000? I choose to ignore its existence.
aaaah brings back soooo many memories. my brother and his best friend were obsessed with it when they were 10 and i was 5, so i got to see and hear everything
i didn’t realize what i was hearing until many years later haha.
The PENGUIN!!! OMG LOL!!! I love Love LOVED this movie!
Aretha kicked a$$! Cab Calloway was just FABULOUS! Most EPIC-est WIN of a car chase ever!! (French Connection is right up there though) I talk people into seeing this movie.
We’re on a mission from God.
Good ’nuff for my ‘rents.
totally epic movie and birth of the epic police pursuit fail! awesome movie to all who werein this movie and have since passed on may ye rest in peace and lets for get about that gawd awful sequel and i love how elwood got jake out of the parking lot! INTO the mall!
We used to shop at that mall (Dixie Square Mall). It had closed the year before The Blues Brothers was shot, but was “redecorated” for filming, leading to quite a bit of confusion & ungrounded hope for the neighborhood. The mall is still partially standing.
Hey, they could turn it into a theme park thing where you can recreate the chase with go-carts!
Or something…
I may have been known as Jake by my friends in a past life, and may have known someone who went by Elwood
I also got go to to a Blues Brothers performance at a HOB last year and got pushed up on stage… dancing with Elwood and Zee for the win! When they came out on stage, I cried like I was seeing the Beatles. One of the best nights of my life!
How funny. My Facebook status yesterday was “Beth wants an Orange Whip!” Maximum win to the power of rad. I’d been watching this movie on crappy old video (the slightly cut homevideo version) since 1981 until I upgraded to the collector’s edition DVD a few years ago. Best soundtrack ever hugely quotable, love it! Maximum win to the power of rad.
So I totally lol’d that your user name is Bethamphetamine…my name’s Beth too and one of my coworkers randomly started calling me that about a year ago. I suppose she wasn’t the first one to think of it, lol.
This is one of my favorite movies ever. It’s got one of the greatest soundtracks and a couple of the funniest guys in comedy. Not to mention a nice little part played by the almighty Princess Leia, a.k.a. Carrie Fisher!
My favorite line was “We play both kinds of music: country and western.”
I was always disappointed that the John Lee Hooker track wasn’t on the album… I saw Hooker in a medium-sized club in St. Louis about 10-15 years ago, and he opened with an acoustic set… Looked like the old bluesman… Then the two lovelies helped him offstage, and it was break time… A little while later, the band was on stage, and the two young ladies helped him to his seat, and someone handed him that Epiphone… And he stood up, and commenced to boogie…
Whoever clicked the thumb down on this one needs to seriously think about their lives..
I say the car chase in Dixie Square Mall in the movie should have its own separate Epic Win. There’s so much win in that segment, that just one Epic Win isnt enough.
I have seen this movie so many times and i recently bought a dvd version and man alive was i surprised by all the awesome extra scenes that they actually put back into the movie!
I don’t post too much, but this was a good read. I’m looking for some info about Carrie Fisher and I found your post, Have you some news about her?
My favorite part of the film was when “The Penguin” hit them both with a ruler for swearing. Laughed all the way through it the first time I saw it
Loved the soundtrack as well.
this is about the greatest movie EVER. i first saw it when i was six and it inspired me to love james brown, ray charles, and aretha franklin. it also inspired me to move to chicago, enjoy life and live it to the fullest that i can, not senser my language, and be jealous of the people at the triple rock church. i love this movie and think that elwood and jake are the most awsome musicians ever conjured up. JOHN LANDIS THANK U FOR THIS AND THRILLER, TWO RIDICULOUSLY ADDICTING FILMS!
