Epic Win: John Candy

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by MattDoc

John Candy was in so many of the movies that shaped our childhood that we don’t even know where to begin. A visit to his IMDb page reveals a plethora of movies that we loved.
He touched our funny bones in so many ways we’re not even going to tell you which moments are our favorites. Instead, we’ll post a few clips we found, and encourage you to tell us which John Candy moments (not limited to the clips provided) were your favorites.

  1. lightchild79 says:

oh man, uncle buck was full of so much epic win it rediculoushe was good in the movie “cool runnings’

    • pfft says:

“Jamaica, we have a bobsled team!” earwurmmmm

      • Nightlyeclipse says:

We just watched Uncle Buck the other day. I love John Candy’s movies. I grew up watching all of them. He truly was a comic genius. So sad he’s gone.

  2. Jess says:

Oh man. I was young when he died… like still single-digit young, and even then I knew. My favorite John Candy Movie was “Wagons East.”

They don’t make them like that anymore.

  3. BigJim says:

So many classic John Candy movies out there. Plus his years on SCTV, truly makes him an epic win.

  4. Mandy says:

Great Outdoors, man. Reminds me of our yearly family vacations to various fishing lakes. The bat scene is the best, of course, because when we would get a bat in our house, that scene pretty much defines what went on – except dad had the BB gun. But the wardrobe was the same.

  5. V10L3N7 JAY says:

Remember seeing Uncle Buck in the theater. Just because my cousin tried out for the part of the teenage girl. She didn’t get it of course.

  6. Sassy says:

For some reason whenever i think of John Candy the first thing that pops into my head is the old “Camp Candy” commercials (or whatever they where). All I remember of those is that they would start off with him in a Hawaiian type shirt, outside on a sunny day saying “Hi I’m john candy and its another beautiful here at camp candy.”
And who could forget Planes Trains and Automobiles (that was him wasn’t it?)

    • Allison says:

OMG! I totally forgot about Camp Candy.
I probably would have never thought of it ever again in my life if you hadn’t mentioned it here!

  7. Allison says:

    My favorites?

Spaceballs (“Radar about to be jammed.” )
Great Outdoors (“Blow it out your ass Roman!”)
Planes Trains and Automobiles (Where are your hands? “Between these 2 pillows! Aaahhh!!!”)
Who’s Harry Crumb (“I am Beejay. Beejay from Bombay!”)
Wink Wilkinson from Little Shop Of Horrors (“So very Weeeeeeird!!!”)

    Love Love Love John Candy.
He is the 1980’s all by himself!

  8. Paul0075 says:

John Candy was a legend and still is. I watched so many of his movies growing up in the 80s. Sad that he’s gone.

  9. puppatoons says:

NOOO! This makes me cry!! Poor John.

  10. Nick R. Bocker says:

Orange whip? Orange whip? Three orange whips!

  11. BAW says:

“Only the Lonely,” the one for which the great Maureen O’Hara came out of retirement to do.

    • Allison says:

That was actually a good movie. Kinda weird to see him do a more serious movie role, but hey, even nice fat guys need love too, right? You were rooting for him through the whole movie!

      • BAW says:

And Maureen O’Hara was such a harridan in that movie, wasn’t she? She said that after she read the script, she knew she had to do it.

    • asjoma says:

That was a really sweet movie! I loved it!

  12. Anonymous says:

That guy scares the crap out of me…

  13. greenduckiesgirl says:

Love him. I had never seen Uncle Buck until about three years ago when my friends made me watch it. I love it now and will watch it whenever it is on.

He just made you smile so much. And then laugh hysterically.

  14. JayPea says:

    Cool Runnings – enough said!!!

  15. Failerella says:

Brilliant, brilliant man. If he’d only given us Johnny LaRue it would have been enough.

  16. CPTNHotSauce says:

I can’t believe nobody’s mentioned either Stripes or Canadian Bacon

  17. Dawn Razor says:

Nobody mentioned ‘Delirious’ either. I LOVE that movie. *sigh*

  18. BRMBug says:

I have loved Uncle Buck since it first came out. The scene with the principal is second only to the phone scene with Chanice.

  19. Lorra says:

I was raised on SCTV so I wouldn’t know where to begin. Dr. Tongue, William B. Williams, Mayor Tommy Shanks, Johnny LaRue!

  20. Hopeless Romance says:

I didn’t know who he was until my friend made me watch Uncle Buck about 4 years ago. I loved it to peices and I really wished I owned the DVD of it. That and Spaceballs!

  21. pfft says:

John Candy – I love you.

He was also in Home Alone (the first one before they made eight million sequels). He took the mom home in the moving van full of polka players.

  22. j_beam says:

Nobody is giving him props as the polka king in Home Alone??? Seriously???

    • Siava says:

Or the perverted brother in Splash that dropped coins on the ground in order to glimpse up women’s dresses.

  23. S. Wagner says:

Loved Uncle Buck, John Candy always reminded me of my brother. I loved the scene where Macauley Culkin was quizzing him at the breakfast table!

  24. Ironkodiak says:

Volunteers (Tom Tuttle From Tacoma Washington…..)
    Splash (The Swedish porn line)
Uncle Buck (peeing in the kiddy toilet get me every time)
Who’s Harry Crumb (FFFFFFT, all there, FFFFFFT, all there, FFFFFFT, one short.
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (Those aren’t pillows!!!!)

My John Candy top 5 flicks.

  25. Mark says:

C’mon people! I can’t believe that NO ONE has mentioned Heavy Metal. His voice for the part of ‘Den’ in that flick was classic!
I always heard that he was the reason it took so long to get released because he was embarrassed by his performance in it.
Spaceballs is a real close second though. (I’m Barf! I’m a Mog. Half man half dog. I’m my own best friend!”

  26. Mystic says:

One word, and one word always to describe my fave moment…
    BARF!

  27. Megan says:

Great Outdoors: “Bear…big bear chase…big bear chase me!”
PT&A’s: “Oh he’s drunk! How would he know where we’re going?!”
Home Alone: “Apparently he was there all day alone with the corpse…”

That man is classic. Nothin but love for him.
