Epic Win: Bob Barker/The Price Is Right

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by E Nottelling

Whenever we were sick (or playing sick) or had a service day at school, Bob would always be there for us. He was like a Rock of Gibraltor of daytime television – you could always count on him to be there for you. He had some great moments too – most of them viewable on YouTube. Watch for yourself as he almost knocks some respect into this kid, like he did Adam Sandler on Happy Gilmore:

  1. shweetums says:

i wish bob was back on it instead of drew carey =/

    • Fuzzi says:

As much as I love Drew Carey, TPIR is just not the same without Bob.

      • Allison says:

I was watching at the laundromat last month, and some college kid was so excited when he got on stage, he called Drew “Bob”!

      • Reece400 says:

        Agreed,

Drew Carey is great.. but he just doesn’t have the same charisma and enthusiamm that Bob seemed to have. I don’t think anyone could compete, but there must be some one better than him for the job?

      • Idene says:

Or Rod Roddy. *sigh* That was sad when he died, he was so awesome and just full of life when he would yell out “*name* come on down!” and so on.

    • Anonymous says:

Drew Carey’s an ok guy as a comedian, but as a game show host he completely lacks personality. Not to mention that he keeps calling the spinoff the showcase showdown and calls the actual showcase shodown “the showcase”. There are millions of civilians who could do a better job than Carey. I’ll bet Drew never even WATCHED the show as a kid or adult.

      • PointsOutTheObvious says:

Sorry, that was me up there. Form data for this site must have gotten cleared and toook my name out.

  2. FL910 says:

    This made my Tuesday afternoons.

  3. Phil says:

Help control the pet population. Get your pets spayed or neutered.

  4. bibliotechnique says:

I dunno, gang. I always thought that the prices were way too high, and most of the contests seem to be fixed. I never cared for the program.

  5. Cheryl says:

Ah, yes, sitting on the sofa and watching The Price is Right at Gramma’s. The two will forever and always be linked in my memory, and I do not care who’s host now or how good they are, if it’s not Bob ‘please spay or neuter’ Barker, it’s *not* TPiR, not to me.

  6. asjoma says:

TPIR always rocked for me. Since Drew is Bob Barker approved I am okay with him. He seems sincerely nice and so was Bob. I will always miss Bob since he was so cool in his job and carried out the hosting gig of his show with such humor and panache, but Carey is going to keep the show going.

Barker, BTW is the original WOOT master and made of pure WIN

  7. Nightlyeclipse says:

Oh the good old days watching TPIR with Bob Barker hosting and Rod Roddy announcing. I loved that show. During my sophomore year in high school, my school would turn the tv’s on in the lunchroom and my lunch period just happened to be at the same time as TPIR. It was a good year. :)

  8. Redd says:

To this day I can always tell when I’m getting sick, because the “Price is Right” theme song inexplicably appears in my head.

  9. Lilly says:

    Bob Barker’s a pimp, seriously.

    • TJ Douchemandzadeh says:

You’re damn right. Bob was banging most of the models on the show. Bob was a king at pimpin’.

  10. Triana says:

I love that the contestant in the clip actually admits that he doesn’t need any of the crap that he’s being offered. That’s a lot better than applauding politely while thinking “I live in a four room apartment. I have no space or need for a dining set that my Grandma would have bought in 1973.”

    • Jess says:

I have often wondered what the contestants did with some of the stuff. Considering how many people live in apartments, or have no interest in water sports, there HAD to be a lot of people thinking ‘what on earth will I do with a hot tub and a patio set? I live on the 12th floor!’
I’ve wondered how many people deliberately went over the price of their showcase, just so they wouldn’t get stuck with a boat they had no desire to own. :)

  11. Puppatoons says:

I always got a kick out of the game with the little mountain climber. I admit I was always waiting for him to fall over the edge of the cliff.

    • Allison says:

      Plinko Rules!!!!!!
      ———————————-
The game I hated was Lucky 7. Where they give you 7 bucks, and you have to guess the numbers in the car price. For every dollar you’re off, they take away a dollar, and you need one dollar left to win the car. I”ve never won that game!! :/
      ————————————
Did you guys see the episode where the old man gues the actual price in the showcase showdown TO THE ACTUAL DOLLAR? How the Eff?????

  12. barboid says:

I loved this show. I was always good at the pricing games, too! I always wanted to be on the show, but lived too far away to make it. This show made me feel smart!

  13. bodo says:

Apologies in advance, but Bob always kind of creeped me out…don’t know what it is, exactly, but…well…ok, let’s get down to it: Oompa Loompas were just never meant to be that tall.

    • Kashmir says:

I’m with you. That orange glow around him with that snow white hair. I heard the theme music every time I saw him.

  14. violynn31 says:

Okay, WTBF on the exact showcase winner??? That’s not statistically possible…is it?? Boy, with a bid only off by $494, I’d be pissed off, too.

Not long ago, I saw some douchebag (it was his 19th birthday) win his bid, his game with a car (Lucky 7, in which he blew the first two numbers but got the last three EXACTLY right so he won with just the dollar left), $25,000 on the big wheel and his showcase (which included another fricken car.

Besides all this, there is nothing else on in my house at 10am on a non-school day than this show.

I also loved Cliffhangers and of course Plinko.

    • Tofino says:

A lot of the audience are TPIR encyclopedias and know the exact price of a lot of the stuff, so if the things in the showcase happen to be stuff they know, and they are good at math, they will be barking out the exact price like crazy people and have friends helping. If the bidder pays attention and can hear them, they can get it right on. This is what happened here according to some folks at the taping.

Drew no-sold it because there was apparently a 45-minute delay between the bid and the reveal at the taping while the director and such grilled the contestant and the audience folks to make sure there was no funny business going on. Fair enough but Drew’s non-reaction after what to the TV audience was a 2 minute ad break just made him seem like a dick. Unfortunate because he’s had some shining moments as host and is only getting better with time.

Oh, Bob is Winny McWin. I miss him. And have your pets spayed or neutered!

  17. foobarbaz says:

What I wonder is why there were commercial breaks. The whole show was a commercial. The more I think about it, the more it seems like something out of a dystopic hyper-consumerism capitalist nightmare. : ( I still liked it though. : )

  18. plaster says:

    Gibraltar!

  19. onceajinx says:

Ahh, college days. All of us with time out of class between 10 and 11 could be found in the student union building, watching Bob. This was in the mid-80’s… I’m still watching!

Bob was indeed an epic host of this show, but I think Drew took Bob’s advice to heart: “Make the show your own. Don’t try to be me.” The change over was hard for some people to take, but I think Bob deserves some time to relax and play a lot of golf, and I bet he laughs at Drew’s jokes sometimes!

Drew’s doing alright. Give him a chance. He was REALLY nervous the first week, and had a BAD week when he hurt his leg and was doped up on pain killers, which I think was why he was so deadpan when that guy had the exact showcase price.

One thing Bob did was INSIST that ONLY American cars be given away on the show. This started during the gas crisis of the 70’s, when Japanese imports became so desirable. Drew has reversed that, because he wants to get some good hybrids on the show, and there AREN’T any decent American ones!

I do want to see Let’s Make a Deal on GSN…. That show is why my purse is full of weird things!

  20. RankMyTyping says:

I know it has been said, but I miss Bob!…..I just thank jebus (not a typo!) every day that Rosie is not hosting

  21. Drew and Bob are the best!

  22. sassy says:

Peronally i stoped watching TPIR after Bob retired, its always been his show, and without him it just doesnt seem right

  23. Ninjarina says:

Dude, all these comments and not a single one about Barney Stinson?

I love this show. It was always on when I was hungover/sick and cutting class in college.

  24. sillywhiskers says:

I have been told that one of my very first phrases as a toddler was “Ba’ Ba’r” (“Bob Barker!”) upon seeing TPIR come on TV while my mom fixed my lunch. I ALWAYS watched Bob when home sick.

  25. Allison says:

I also remember Rod Roddy. The fat announcer guy with the wacky jackets and glasses. He and Bob were a team!

  26. fixman88 says:

TPiR is absolute and utter win! I watched it whenever I got the chance! I quit after Bob left, though. It’s just not the same anymore :(

  27. Johnny's girl says:

When the bf and I arrive home and I open the garage door for him, I do a little price-is-right-girl flourish and then step aside. It’s one of our little rituals.

    RIP Bob

  28. Kevin says:

Could you write what the guy said? I don’t speak english so is difficult to understand… thanks! :)

    • Allison says:

In the video posted at top?
The guy told Bob that they were nice prizes, but he didn’t need any of them. The made Bob mad.

I’d like Bob to take that spoiled kid down like in Happy Gilmore!

  29. Jess says:

My first phrase was allegedly “Bob Barker! Come down!”

  30. Anniee451 says:

And then Happy Gilmore tried to beat him up – haha! When a fake “scandal” was created, trying to slander him for a consensual relationship with an adult woman, he did the classy thing and came out with the story before they could use it against him.

    Everyone loves Bob Barker.

  31. Marc Grondin says:

i(like most of us) grew up watching bob on TPIR it was great. drew does a ok job but it’s not the same(not that anyone could ever replace bob) it’s still fun to watch tho

  32. sarah says:

and there was always that one douche when guessing prices at the start, when the person beside him guessed $500 would always say $501 >:(
