Epic Win: ABC Weekend Special

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by M Bailey

Although a lot of the children’s literature that ABC Weekend Special covered wasn’t as good as reading the book, it definitely exposed us to stories we may have never known about otherwise. It may have even inspired a few of us to go read the book.
What’s your favorite ABC Weekend Special episode?

» 28 Blasts From The Past

  1. CB says:

I loved these. Lots of good books you never heard of before. “Scruffy” was my favorite.

  2. Brad says:

This goes hand in hand with CBS Storybreak as my favorite education-disguised-as-entertainment from my childhood. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0_DPRFKel8

  3. lunacydress says:

The only one I remember is The Mouse and the Motorcycle.

  4. Don says:

Whether animated or live-action, the “original” Weekend Specials were awesome. Started to dip a bit with “O. G. Readmore” and that, but the late-70s/very early 80s Weekend Specials were top-notch.

I remember Scruffy, The Trouble With Miss Switch, and several live-action ones (something with a cougar, The Ransom of Red Chief, and Soup for President).

  5. Deion says:

Agreed, Runaway Ralph aka “The Mouse and the Motorcycle” was the best.

    • TheObject says:

actually, they made a TV movie for both of those books. The original story “The Mouse and the Motorcycle” and one of the sequel books “Runaway Ralph”

  6. Shade Tail says:

Am I the only person who thinks that intro looks a lot like a drug trip as represented by the animated Yellow Submarine movie?

  7. kelli says:

does anyone remember the title of the one with the two kids whose house washes away in a flood. they land on some kind of island–they fight off a tiger or something…

  8. KIMMIECHAN says:

Ah~ Intelligence at its best . . . . . . . anyhoo, I do fondly remember watching these when I was a kid. nice to be reminded.

  9. stillatoucan says:

Does anyone remember the show where the guy read part of a book while he drew a picture of a scene from the book? Then he would tell you to go read the rest of the book.

    • Nicole says:

That was “Gather ‘Round” on PBS (the one with the charcoal drawings, I think?). I remember him illustrating something from the Little House books, which inspired me to start reading those.

    • Aggie says:

      YES! I loved that show!

    • mary says:

wow. i totally forgot i watched that! thanks for the memory!

    • Mad Ness Monster says:

There were actually a couple of those, and I wonder if every city had a different series? The ones I remember both had stop-motion opening sequences and were named “Books from Cover to Cover” and “Readit!”

  10. Anonymous says:

    Secret Land of Og.

  11. Anonymous says:

Bunnicula! And the one about the kid who works in a magic shop… So many good episodes.

  12. dingo says:

Wow, this was a surprise flashback.
It’s pretty clear from this clip that most everyone from our parent’s generation was COMPLETELY FUCKING WASTED for about 1.5 decades, including the execs at ABC weekend specials.

  13. ForteWily says:

THe Monster Ring, that was my favorite.

  14. Ladytink_534 says:

Scruffy was my favorite too (it’s based on a book by Jack Stoneley)

  15. Doc says:

…Ratha’s Creature. It wasn’t until…ages later, in highschool, that i found the book. I will always be greatful to ABC for that. =)

    • Arcbuster says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one who remembered that book! I didn’t find them till middle school as a kid and by gum were they darker and more adult than anything that ABC special showed.

  16. Mad Ness Monster says:

Well, that was the single most 70’s opening credits sequence I have ever seen.

  17. GLENNEH says:

    People like you sicken me.

  18. Nightlyeclipse says:

Geez, get out of the basement and get a life!
