Epic Win: Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

Submitted by D Vazquez

Do it Rockapella! It’s so hard to not sing along with Rockapella. Remember how awesome this show was? And we were learning while we watched! We heard rumors that some teachers even let their kids watch episodes instead of giving actual History and Geography lessons.
The best part was it was kind of a nerdy show so the contestants were always fairly awkward 12-year-olds, as demonstrated by Gregg in the video above.

  1. Kelzy says:

Where IN EARTH Is Carmen Sandiego? FAIL haha
I used to LOVE Where In The WORLD Is Carmen Sandiego, and it’s spin-off Where IN Time Is Carmen Sandiego… I wanted to be on it, but I was about 7…
Great, great stuff. Still have the theme song on my iPod <3

  2. ponyboy says:

Haha, I still play all the old DOS games with the silly prompts!

  3. Nostawyn says:

I adored this show, and its spin-off, and the games. The cartoon was okay, too. I can still sing the them song to this. :)

But, uh, title fail, me thinks. Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego? was the cartoon. Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? is the gameshow. Where IN Earth is Carmen Sandiego? just makes it sound like she’s digging a hole.

  4. Allison says:

Loved this show. I always wanted to be on it.
Our 5th grade teacher let us play Where in the US is Carmen San Diego? It was on the ooooold comps. Black screen. Green words and pics.

  5. John says:

    LOL GREG GETHARD

  6. MadAriad says:

My mom was so excited when this show started. She always wanted us to watch it to learn geography.
Probably why I can’t stand it.

  7. Rhea says:

‘Where in Earth is Carmen Sandeigo’????

    That’s quite the epic fail.

The show on the other hand was AMAZING!!

  8. Cheryl says:

The computer games are also total win. I liked those more than the show b/c I actually got to do something other than shout out answers at the TV like a moron. ;)

  9. Maggie says:

the games came before the show….and EPIC FAIL for the title.

    i loved that show yo.

  10. Kelzy says:

Lynne Thigpen as the Chief… every, and I mean EVERY time I saw her on TV I would be like “ZOMFG It’s the Chief! Where’s Carmen Sandiego?!?” LoL

    • Allison says:

      Me too!
And every time I see that fat red-headed lady from the Hogan Family, I always say “Hey look! It’s Mrs. Poole!” That was from about 20 years ago, and I still say it!
(she was also the bitchy next door neighbor in Dickie Roberts)
Hey someone should nominate the Hogan Family for OUAW!

    • Maggie says:

      ME TOO!

  11. JLKauffman says:

MC Lars and YTCracker have a song on the Digital Gangster LP called Carmen Sandiego has Really Bad Morals. It’s hilarious. and it’s on Itunes and http://www.ytcracker.com

  12. lunacydress says:

Did a little research and found a blog entry from Gregg, the kid in the middle….there was a reason he kept leaning into the mic!

    • Ninjarina says:

I enjoyed that way more than I should have. Thanks!

    • Maggie says:

OMG i just watched the whole thing..i forgot how much i LOVED that show. thanks so much.

oddly enough i recently wanted to try and find kids that were on random tv shows from my childhood…like blogs of kids that were on amercia’s funniest home videos or something. this was great!

  13. Donkephant says:

Thanks for the heads up on the two title fails from all of our OUAW users. The mistakes have been fixed.

  14. Johnnyface says:

Was his name seriously Greg “Gethard”???

  15. Kewlio says:

“Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?” was the kinda cheapy cartoon show. “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” was the kinda cheapy (but hundreds of times more win) PBS game show. Thanks for fixing that. XD

  16. Smalls says:

Loved the show! My college roommate and I would take over the big-screen TV at the bar down the street from our apartment each afternoon and watch Animaniacs and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego. Have also seen Rockapella in concert twice, and they were FANTASTIC.

  17. Krystal says:

WITWICS is sooo past an epic win LOL!!! I remember when they had a national contestant tour and I was six months too young to go and I cried!!! I wanted to be on the show sooo bad!

  18. Multi-Facets says:

I loved this show when I was little. I was homeschooled from the middle of fourth grade on, so I was able to watch this every chance I got. Mom, understandably, was reluctant to let me watch any TV during “normal school hours”, but then she caught a show and didn’t object once after that. Especially when I actually started learning from it. ^n_n^

Oh, good times. Greg, Lynne, Rockapella, how I miss ya.

  19. Rhiannon says:

I loved this show! PBS Rocked. I liked The Chief best lol

  20. Pennyforth says:

Man, it sucks that there’s all these other clips on YouTube of moments from the show, but apparently not a single clip of just the end credits with Rockapella singing the theme. It can’t be a rights issue with the band–there’s umpteen other clips of Rockapella performing the theme and any number of other songs everywhere but on the show itself. Makes me sad that I can’t get that particular nostalgia fix…. :(

  21. brandon says:

Ah the old floppy boot disk game was epic, never watched the show / TV series. Remember Oregon Trail? “Brandon has died from dysentery.”

  22. Carmen says:

Do it Rockapella! I loved that song. And IIRC, they changed the line “Chicago to Czechoslovakia and back” when it became the Czech Republic.

  23. di says:

Rockapella performed at my school when i was a kid.

    win!!

    • nn says:

I got to go to one of their concerts when they first came up with the carmen sandiego theme song, i have a cd signed by them, its rad

  24. Steve says:

Is it just me or when I was a Tween I wanted to be a Neurosurgeon too?

  25. me10101 says:

I loled so hard when he said that it was safer in Jerusalem.

  26. D.R. says:

I loved the singers. This show was so good. It had real geography questions in amid all the story setting. And “the Chief” was the best! :)

  27. lboosmommy says:

I’m in the Game = WIN, Show = FAIL camp.

The games rocked, the show sucked in comparison.

  28. sherlockmoles says:

The games were great, and the original game show was a lot of fun, at least when I was seven or eight. Where in Time was pretty terrible, though, mostly because they got rid of everything I had like about Where in the World.

  29. bill says:

The people who came in second always got better prizes than the people who actually won the show. Plus these kids that want to be neurosurgeons and lawyers at 11–come on! Their parents probably wouldnt let them take a piss without first reciting the Greek alphabet.

  30. Ricette says:

I remember being so into that show. They even had that do it at home contest and being the freak I was I made the paper in my town for winning one of those damn t-shirts they gave out to the at home players. I wish I knew where that shirt was now, 11-12 years later haha. Then the spinoffs and games… it was terrible.

  31. Sarolite says:

I remembered playing the game at school and then getting the home version of the computer game, but I hadn’t remembered the show until I saw this! Thanks! I wonder where those nerdlings are now!

  32. KyrieEleison says:

I was 6 when I first started watching WITWICS, and I had a world map on my wall over my bed, and I used to run upstairs and try to figure out the answers before Greg read them off. I was never fast enough. Now that a bunch of episodes are available online, I’m still learning things… I’m the only person I know that knows offhand where Ulan Bator is (it’s the capital of Mongolia).

Some of you may not know, but Lynne “The Chief” Thigpen died in 2003. She was one of the people that made the show truly great; we fans still miss her.

  33. Karin says:

I thought it was just a video game.. man – I missed out on this one! Loved the video game though.

  34. Chief Oddball says:

I remember one episode where part of the Tourist Information board (with the spinning locations) actually fell apart right after a contestant found the warrant. Even better was how Rockapella then abruptly sang out: “The budget!”

  35. Randy says:

I knew Rockapella back BEFORE Carmen, when they were doing shows at tiny little Manhattan bars… they were, and are, ubercool!

  36. Anonymous says:

ooo so u stumbled upon that comic too

  37. Anonymous says:

I loved the game show as a little boy. It was fitting that lynne Thigpen was the chief. RIP Lynn

  38. Monty Python 4eva says:

No one I know except for my TV Production teacher remembers this show–not even my parents! I didn’t really watch it–but I remember seeing it :/

  39. Kelly says:

I can’t believe I watched this show in the 5th grade.

  40. Ron says:

OMFG! I’ve even seen this episode!!!! This show is why I am such a BEAST at geography to this day….I’d really studied that Africa map there was no way I’d go on and lose to the Africa map like very one else….too bad I was too young to be on the show. :(

    BTW the Chief is dead.

  41. Allison says:

    Oh snap!
