Epic Win: Land of the Lost

Submitted by P Gifford

We loved this show as a kid! The Sleestacks, the Pakuni, and all of the dinosaurs and other crazy creatures in all of their campy awesomeness!
Now they’re remaking another one of our childhood favorites and we’re not sure what we think about it. It doesn’t look like it holds very true to the original television series, but we’re sure Hollywood will explain that away with their usual, “Yeah, but look! It’s got Will Farrell in it!”

Now that you’ve seen the trailer for the Hollywood remake, which do you think we’ll get more of: disappointment or entertainment?

Incorrect source or offensive?

  1. Machelle says:

    am I first?

Dude, no. Just no. Hollywood, QUIT RAPING Y CHILDHOOD!

  2. MsMsBurning says:

Loved the old TV show! Most histrionic acting in a Saturday morning kid’s show EVER!

    • Tyedye says:

Not sure what you mean by histrionic, but remember in the second season
(which I have on DVD, I’m not that old) when that pink figure knocked Marshall out, he glanced behind him before he fell? And then there was that marathon on SciFi.

  3. Sadie Thompson says:

I was all tickled to see this because I used to watch “Land of the Lost” every Saturday, but apparently I’m remembering a different “Land of the Lost” from the early 90s or thereabouts. Is my brain malfunctioning or does anyone else remember another version?

    • MsMsBurning says:

Yes, there was another 90’s version. Tried to be more teachy and thus failed.
The cheesy factor of the 70’s show is whhat makes it a classic.

    • boaks says:

Yeah I got a little confused when the banjo started in this intro, as I remembered the Land of the Lost intro being more rock-like and 90’s, so I believe we’re remembering the same version. My sister and I enjoyed the 90’s version.

      • Naoyusimi says:

Oh, man….there was a 90s version? Ew, I didn’t know that. I’m old, so I remember the original. Loved. It. Watched it every weekend, unless my older brother was around; I’d lose that one. I was highly disappointed in the trailer, up to about 55 seconds or so. Too typical-Will-Ferrell, making fun of the idiot … but the rest might be watchable. I’ll give it a go . . . on DVD, anyway. Theatres? I hit the theatre only about twice a year, anymore. My 1st this year will definitely be “Watchmen”.

    • Crysta says:

yea, I watched the one you were talking about. The intro was where there were driving instead of rafting.

    • KQy says:

Yeah, I grew up on the 90s version, too. Barely remember anything from it, but I liked it. :) The 70s version seems fun, too, in its cheesy, campy way. Not sure how I feel about the remake, except that Will Farrell is definitely NOT a plus.

  4. hmph says:

    Will Farrell = movie FAIL

  5. dolst says:

    Whoah, the original starred WESLEY!

As for the 90s remake, they changed the Sleestak into talking Triceratops people. At least the movie remake makes them look the same. Still lose points for having Will Ferrell. But at least they get a point or two for “MATT LAUER CAN SUCK IT!!” hehe

    Surf Wisely.

  6. FatTuesday says:

Pleah. Some things should not be remade. Especially not with Will Ferrell. Now if they were to reissue the origional on DVD……

  7. Allison says:

Remember Chaka? The little ape-boy that was their friend?

  8. D.R. says:

Dinosaurs! This show was the best. :)

  9. Mordaris says:

I remember being scared to death by the Sleestak a couple of times. Those things could be creepy… and their “god” in the pit was intense from time to time.

There was no “Wesley” in the original show.

    • Naoyusimi says:

Yes, they were a bit scary (for kids, anyway), but I don’t remember the god in the pit . . .

      And yeah, to Dolst: No “Wesley”!–it was: “Marshal, Will, and Holly . . . on a rou-tine ex-pe-di-tion …”

      • Mordaris says:

The sleestak would throw sacrifices down into the pit. You never saw the creature, as the camera would only show it as a Point-Of-View shot, but you heard its moaning roar. As a kid, it creeped me out sometimes, as did the sleestak hissing…. and the bug-eyes. I always thought Enok was cool, though.. the intelligent sleestak.
I also remember “Grumpy” the tyrannosaur, “Dopey” the baby brontosaur, and “Spike” the triceratops.

      • dolst says:

Please to watching the credits at 0:47…

        Starring
        WESLEY
        as Will Marshall

        Surf Wisely.

  10. k says:

I watched LOTL for a while in the 70’s – ’cause I went to several Star Trek Conventions in NYC in the mid 70’s and David Gerrold (wrote Star Trek episode “The Toruble with Tribbles”) begged us to watch it (he was a writer/producer of LOTL). The cheesey-ness was fun, until I couldn’t take it any more… : )

  11. Anonymous says:

    Eww…

Will Ferrel already ruined Bewitched for me. Why does he have to wreck Land of the Lost too?

  12. ascatal says:

ya yes land of the Lost was one of my fave saturday morning tv shows as a kid, epic as tv show willbe an apic fail as a movie, Hollywood is a memory murderer

  13. Arthur says:

Anyone else find it funny that back in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,Will Ferrell’s character was named Marshall Willenholly like the Land of the Lost people?

  14. Anonymous says:

The original was crap, didn’t care for the 90s Version, this actually could be fun …. but not worth going to the movies.

  15. Shalin says:

But Will Farrell does remind me of the actor that played the father.

  16. Daniel says:

Well I think the movie looks great. You talk about the original series like its some sort of masterpiece that shouldnt be touched. Give me a break! Looks like it could be a good vehicle for will for a change

  17. RCIAG says:

The actor that played Will in the original show was named Wesley, that’s probably what dolst is talking about.

His full name was Wesley Eure. At the time he thought it would be cool to call himself just “Wesley.” I remember him being in all the teen mags of the day.

He is also the co-creator of “Dragon Tales.”

And in another bit of useless info & crossover cool, he wrote a children’s book called “The Red Wings of Christmas” that was illustrated by Ron Paolillo, who played yet another 70s icon Horshack!

  18. doan says:

“He’s right behind me, isn’t he?” Reminds me of so many TV programs I used to watch.

  19. Amaranth Wise says:

Okay, I’m totally one of those “Stop stealing our sweet sweet meeeeemmmorieeees!”. However, I also want to see this – it seems like they actually tried to make something sorta new rather than a direct copy, which is nice.

  20. Outside Food says:

I’m no huge fan of Will Farrell, but I might give this movie a shot at the theatre just for the fun of sitting with outside food in front of a big screen. It might be one of those times where the remake respects our memory of the original–pokes fun of it while still giving us the moments that worked for us as kids: scary adventure, giant food, crazy fantasy. I like that the two kids are now two people around the current ages of the original audience of either version of the show. This might work.

I live in a word of optimism, because I was raised on the belief that somewhere I might carry giant strawberries in a cart pulled by a friendly doe-eyed dinosaur.

  21. Allegra! says:

ANNA FRIEL!!! COME BACK TO PUSHING DAISIES!!

  22. herbalessence says:

I used to watch the 70’s version; never saw the 90’s show. Will Ferrell has certainly been in some duds (“Bewitched” among them), but I actually like him (I LOVE “Talladega Nights” and even “Elf”). LOTL was as cheesy as they come, and so is Ferrell, so I don’t see how he could possibly ruin the show’s sainted image. I’ll go see it.

  23. Anonymous says:

will ferrell…fail!…honestly though, my brothers loved this show i hated it…i was more of a wonderbuggy, dyno woman and electra girl and ark iii person myself

  24. TehMishy says:

Actually, I preferred the one I grew up with. It was about a family on vacation when the earth opened up and took them and their station wagon with it. lol it was on Nickelodeon..

  25. Redstone says:

What? No Zarn in the remake?

  26. mary says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wf43DzOmGfc

    that’s the 1990s version intro.

i think i’ll see the movie when it hits the cheap theatres, or else redbox it. it might be funny, thought i think at least half of will ferrell’s movies have been complete crap.

    • xoxobang says:

That’s the one that I grew up with. :) I remember bits and pieces from it. It used to be on Nickelodeon lol. xDDD; I never knew of the original (I fail at this, I suppose). But when I heard about the remake with Will Farrel I felt really sick inside. :’( He ruined Bewitched for me, too.

  27. dingo says:

One of my favorites. The movie remake – like most – is guaranteed to suck. Producers, directors and actors lose sight of what made the original so good. Well, directors and actors lose sight; the producers just want to make a buck by capitalizing on the name recognition and concept. Producers could care less about what made the series great.

  28. RavPadfoot says:

The intro cracks me up! I haven’t seen it since I was a kid and I didn’t realize back then how fake the raft part is. It seemed so real. That intro just made my day. *giggle*

  29. Enik says:

I’m disappointed that Land of the Lost is going to be a comedy. I’d much prefer to see a mature take on the Land of the Lost concept. I love the old TV show for it’s sci-fi underpinnings and melodrama, not the goofiness that occasionally crept in.

If you’re interested in Land of the Lost, you might want to visit my fan site with coverage of both versions of the TV series and the latest news on the upcoming movie.

  30. anon says:

what the heck are all of you people talking about? the original show was poorly written AT BEST and a crime against humanity at worst. i for one am glad to see the movie come out because maybe it will succeed in making diamonds out of poo.

  31. Matt says:

I did not get to see the original, but I was a fan of the saturday morning one in the 90s. That cave girl that befriended the family was one of my first real crushes on an actress. Come to think of it, she wa sprobably the only reason I watched the show, lol.
