Epic Win: Double Dare
Submitted by katsak
“Lets see which family we can cover in the most slimy stuff!” should have been the name of this show. Anybody ever figure out what that stuff was?
Double Dare can probably be credited with reviving the Pieing movement after it died off when The Three Stooges were canceled in the 70’s. Way to carry that torch Double Dare. Without you and the inspiration to pie a sibling that you gave millions of children, Ready-Whip may have gone out of business.

my uncle worked on Super Sloppy Double Dare in the late 80’s/early 90’s. He was one of the guys that came out between stunts and cleaned the sets. He said it was the worst job ever. My grandma recorded a ton of episodes to try to see him, so I still have a SSDD VHS collection. I like to bust them out once in a while, just for old time’s sake.
Marc Summers was the best. That game was funny. I liked it when the kids found the flags, though they hardly ever did.
i always wanted to be on that show. it looked like the best freakin time! its funny that marc summers is OCD and hates to get dirty. that show must have killed him!
I remember that about Marc Summers. I saw an interview when he was talking about that saying that’s why he would stay as far from the messes as he could and someone would help clean him up if he got dirty.
I used to want to be on that show so bad! I’d sit at home answering all the questions and screaming at the families that would go through the obstacle course.
I think the slime is like a pudding-type substance. I took the tour of the Nickelodeon Studios in Florida and they let us taste some of it. I do know it’s made up of food so it wouldn’t make anyone sick or anything to get it on them. Tasted a little like vanilla pudding if I remember correctly. It was like 15 years ago.
I absolutely loved that show!! I wish they would show re-runs of it!!
I remember thinking the questions were so easy and when the two families would go back and forth with “Dare.” “Double-Dare.” “Physical Challenge”, I was always thinking, “That question was so easy! Geez, you guys just want to roll around in slime, that’s all!!!”
A friend of mine went on Double-Dare when she was a kid. Apparently Marc Summers is a little too friendly to children. She was definitely creeped out.
very funny!!!
And Marc Summers now does the show Unwrapped on the Food Network where he talks about how different foods and candies are made. We loved watching this show when I was a kid, we were so excited when my parents finally got extended basic cable so we could watch it at home.
hard to believe this show even had a game on the NES…
You kidding?! There was an OLD Pc version for DOS! I played it back when I was coming along – that and Wheel of Fortune. Old black and white (or in this case yellow) graphics.. that game was awesome
I loved this show. The thing I remember most about it was one episode where the contestant was asked to name the George Michael album featuring the song “Faith”. The contestant, a young boy, answered “I Want Your Sex”. Marc replied, “I think you already have it.”
I call shenanigans. Proof demanded.
It was funny when they’d have a physical challenge that was clearly never tested out, resulting in epic failure of the contestants. It’d be like “You need to get 10 of these rings in the bowl in 30 seconds” and they’d get 1.
Same thing with the obstacle course at the end. The had like 3 minutes to do it, and they’d be set to finish with 30 seconds to spare…but Dad couldn’t find the flag on the last obstacle. They’d give the “oh, so close”, but you could totally see the kids crying.
Speaking of which, I still use “I’d like to take the physical challenge” as a response to difficult questions. It’s right up there with “these aren’t the droids you’re looking for”.
I always wanted to run in the One Ton Human Hamster Wheel.
I wish Nick still did this little piece of awesome.
I love those old game shows.
I had the old NES game but never saw the show.
I love how on these shows, the prizes would sometimes be cans of Tuna.
As I’ve heard, the slime is made of apple sauce with green dye
Oh wow, I totally remember this too. It even came up on The Venture Brothers, that hilarious, evil show that takes all of your childhood memories and reveals them to be hollow and false. God I love that show.
Anywho, I always thought the goo looked like corn starch and green dye. Suppose it could’ve been apple sauce too. Or pudding.
It must have been edible. There was always some weird kid or another trying to lick it off their face or sleeve.
It always grossed me out when they would have to get the flag out of the big nose.
