Epic Win: Bill Nye the Science Guy

Submitted by C Conders

The reason kids these days are so poorly educated is because they don’t have nerd-crack like Bill Nye to keep them interested in the things they were learning in school. Bill Nye could make just about anything interesting.

Look at this – Bill Nye is teaching us about mammals using Suicidal Tendencies’ “Institutionalized”:

» 124 Blasts From The Past

  1. Casey Kasum says:

I frigging loved Bill Nye!!! I still remember some of the stuff he imparted to us!

    (first?)

    • Beck Carman says:

      Bill Ny

    • laury says:

      god i loved that show
but i always thought every once in a while he’d get fed up and just say “MAGIC! It’s magic ok? Simplified b*tch!”

      but he was always cool

am i the only one who loved the songs at the end to make you remember the lessons? i still sing the amphibian one every time!

    • Jen says:

::Belts out:: R-E-C-Y-C-L-E find out what it means to me R-E-C-Y-C-L-E somethin somethin somehtin!!!! oh and i remember once my mom freaked out cause she walked in the room during “lets talk about STRESS baby!” lmao! awesome…i miss him…

    • Anonymous says:

Do not any of you people remember he started on “Almost Live” here in Seattle? That was the coolest! Plus, I knew him somewhat personally because before he bacame famous as Bill Nye the Science Guy, he worked at a company my Dad worked for and I got to meet him.

    • Gennums says:

yes, he friggin rocked, i have a signed book from him

  2. AxelTheDragon says:

Oh man, I loved that show! I got to watch it in 8th grade last year ago, too! ^_^

  3. FBR says:

God, I always looked forward to the day when the teacher was too lazy to teach and instead just put in a Bill Nye tape. It was so much win.

  4. I_Love_Jim_Henson says:

Bill Nye, the Science guy! *starts humming theme*

  5. Beck Carman says:

Sorry about above, haven’t posted here before. Bill Nye actually has a current show running on the Science Channel (112 for me). Its called “Stuff happens”. Its mildly entertaining, not as great as it was back when I was a child but hes not dead just yet, so theirs hope.

    • dissimilitude says:

I think I saw a little of that. Bill was trying to make me feel bad about eating sugar because of the environmental impact…which, dammit, Bill, you were (a lot) more fun years ago and do not attempt to come between me and my sugar.

      • Beck Carman says:

Its not overall a terrible show. Ive seen a few episodes. I watch it when i catch it but dont hunt it down on my own.

      • Taima says:

He’s not geting in between you and your sugar. “There are alternatives!”

LOVE me some Bill Nye B-)

  6. lelah says:

    Give me Mr. Wizard instead!!!

  7. Krazy says:

OMG, I love bill nye. He was recently on an episode of Stargate Atlantis, and was making me feel all… reminiscent…

    • Vi31 says:

I loved both Bill Nye and Beakman. Bill’s show was for the actual science student, Beakman more for the ADD types. I had crushes on them both as well (but now Beakman is gay, boo.)

      • utaduta says:

oh my gad! i had a crush on both of them too! ahhhh!!
bill nye the science guy…bill, bill, bill!!! :)

        • nightlyeclipse says:

Oh good more people like me who had crushes on Bill Nye and Beakman. :)

          • stan says:

OMFG this is awesome, a forum filled with geeky chicks… Wait……… You aren’t dudes are you? lol.
But Beakman vs Bill Nye was the eternal debate back when I was in school, we even had a class vote on it, Bill Nye won by like a 3-1 margin. But then again, our class was pretty geeky, lol.

    • T. Doc says:

That was the first episode of SGA I watched- because it had Bill Nye- and then I proceeded to get addicted and watch the whole series from the beginning. …It was pretty awesome having him on there, especially with the hitting on Jewel Staite.

  8. Lisbeth says:

I strongly believe my current love for science (notably chemistry and biology) is because I watched this show religiously growing up. I wish I had the Science Channel so I could watch Stuff Happens, but there’s been a few episodes of it that have aired on TLC and I squee’d with happiness as I watched them.

    • Casa says:

      Second to that sister!
I was alwayes curious about how things worked, but couldn’t alwayes wrap my brain around a conscept. Bill Nye could explain any thing. Some people said he “made it fun” but realy, this stuff is awsome all on it’s own, to me any way. Hes kinda like a great science teacher I never actualy had a class with.

Now that Im older I pick up on things a lot faster than most, I think it’s because my little brain got rewired by this show!

  9. Anonymous says:

    LOL!
    they still show us that..
    im frigging 12!

  10. jtl says:

I remember he explained evaporation so perfectly I immediately began seeing everything as composed of moving molecules.

  11. Daveyid Ecks says:

All I wanted was a Pepsi!

  12. MOOT says:

My seventh grade science teacher always let us watch this show! Much better than reading the textbook. More teachers should adopt that kind of teaching style. Kids learn more if they’re interested.

    • crazy freak says:

Lol I’m in 8th grade and my science shows us Bill Nye all the time! It’s the only reason I learn in his class!

  13. Katie says:

    I loved him… But apparently he’s a huge douchebag. :(

  14. faetal says:

My 7th grade science teacher let us watch so much Bill… on laserdisc… it was epic.
    *sigh*
Alton Brown (Good Eats) is awesome cause he reminds me of a Bill who cooks.

  15. ch1d3th says:

That Institutionalized parody was indeed epic, epic win. I was a Bill Nye junkie as a kid, I watched the show every afternoon after school, but I dont remember that skit. Thanks for digging up that gem!

  16. crystaldragon says:

    WOOOT Bill Nye rules

  17. Psycholadeh says:

    WOO! Bill Nye ROCKS!

  18. smashpro1 says:

Everything I know about science, I learned from this man

  19. Dutchie says:

hehe, never knew he was famous
just know him from the Epcot-show “Universe of Engery” with Ellen DeGeneres

but then again: I’m just a stupid foreigner ;)

  20. Guido says:

The Eyes of Nye was one of his better shows. Aimed at young adults rather then kids.

  21. FirebirdDancer525 says:

OMG I LOVE this show. I owe all my elementary knowledge of science and stuff to this guy and the magic school bus. Some channel needs to do re-runs of this show cause I would definitely watch it. WOOOOOO

  22. J says:

He’s coming to speak at my school (University at Buffalo), and everyone I’ve talked to about it has said, “Hell yeah, of course I’m going!”

  23. Dexaan says:

    Bill Bill Bill Bill!

  24. angelfish says:

Everything I know about science I learned from Bill Nye and The Magic School Bus. God bless 90’s PBS :P

  25. YES! says:

    YES x 9000!!!

  26. Weasel says:

Bill Nye is totally coming to my campus on February 11. And the show sold out in a day and a half. I never got tickets. SO lame.

  27. knightsintodreams says:

hell yah magic school bus~!! ive STILL retained so much science knowledge from both these shows~!! specially MS. ms frizz was awesome…:D the baking, ant, bee sound episodes are the only reason i STILL know about those subjects XD i had these older kids in my neighborhood ranting about using sprinklers and wasting water. my 7yr old self blew them out of the water with my explanation of the water cycle. the had nothing to say to that lolol and i thought i was pretty smug XD aw good times. man i learned so much from these shows. anyone remember Richard Scaries?? now THAT was an awesome show…they dont have TV for kids like that anymore…..just have crap now….

  28. Robert says:

To this day, every time I hear “solid” in a science class, I have to hold my arm out and say “Solid” like the beatnik guy in the “phases of matter” episode.

  29. AbandoningReality says:

They actually play this in our science class occasionally, and we always love watching it. Such a shame we only get to watch it at the end of the term when there is nothing else to do.

  30. bluegizka says:

I miss my 5th grade science class. Whenever we didn’t go up to the big multipurpose room for something fancy (l think that only happened about once a month) the teacher would just put in a bill nye tape and the entire room would fall silent for a half hour. it was epic win.

And OMFG Magic School Bus was THE SHIT. Speaking of those two 90’s PBS classics, does anyone else remember the old computer games? I remember the bill nye game had this crazy plot about a meteor and the two magic school bus games being…um, I think an ocean one and a inside the human body type thing. It was made of win, but I never got far in the bill nye one. The intro was sweet (played it a bunch), then I just got stuck, pissed off and went back to play more Myst. So, bill nye outsmarted me, but myst was easy.

  31. Cat Girl says:

This is the guy who turned me into a scientist!

  32. Phaelin says:

Lions, Tigers, and Bears – oh my!

  33. Pennyforth says:

Sorry, but I had to thumbs-down this. I prefer to get my science from a dude in a wig, a cute assistant, and a guy in a rat suit. No offense to Bill, but he was a bit too bland for my tastes. Then again, I was in high school back then, so I was looking more for entertainment than education on concepts that I mostly already understood.

  34. Teh Mishy says:

No, kids are not only poorly educated because of this…look at the “kid friendly” crap they are showing on tv now…no longer do you have educational programming you have mindless dribble spewing out from pointless plots. Like that messed up show dealing with a girl with pink hair who is supposed to be a lil kid when is most obviously a young adult…its scares me…no wonder the younger generation is the way it is..its pathetic e.e ok I’m done

    • stan says:

Actually, preschool entertainment today is much more educational than it has ever been. The concepts may seem different to you, but think about how silly Big Bird and Snuffy seemed to our parents and grandparents. The show you are referring to is designed to encourage kids to be more active and is not neccessarily meant to be intellectually stimulating so much so as socially stimulating. Also, I think they cast the part well, they chose a young actress with a diminuative stature to play the part. If you told me that kid was 10, I’d believe you.
On to a second point, how many movies or television shows that are popular with adults have no meaningful plot? You should probably take a step down off of your parapet and examine what aspects of your life are pointless

  35. Anonymous says:

    BEST SHOW EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRR
    seriously

  36. Ameri says:

They let us watch those videos all the way into grade 9! (grade 10 now, only boring science movies )

  37. Fred the Fourth says:

From the Putting Your Money Where Your Mouth Is Dept:
When Bill and Magic Schoolbus were on I was a RELIGIOUS donor / member of my local PBS station, KQED. My kids watched (and I taped) every episode.

Later, older daughter was accepted at Stanford, MIT, Wash U St. Louis, U. Michigan (full ride), Berkeley (Regents Scholarship), UCSD, UCLA, and wait-listed at Harvard. Currently at MIT. Don’t have data on son yet :-)

This is not a coincidence. Thank you Bill, and whoever wrote Magic Bus.

PS. I am no longer a member of KQED.

  38. Brianna says:

Wow…….Bill Nye. He used to scare the hell out of me. My 7th grade science teacher (who was obssessed with the word ‘critters’) pulled out a DVD of him once…

The entire class screamed and took cover under our desks.

Nothing freakier than a head on a lightbulb

  39. D.R. says:

Somebody give him the Nobel Prize. He hasn’t discovered anything, but his TV show is one of the awesomest ever. That’s got to count for something, right?

  40. Orchid says:

I’ll agree that the show is awesome! My physics teacher in high school said that she met him in person once at a conference, and he was kindof a dink in real life. Apparently he looked down on her because she was just a high school teacher and he was on TV. The show is still great though! Entertaining and informative.

  41. Snickers says:

Bill Nye the Science Guy ROX UR SOX!!!
i luved it when the teacher showed us a Bill Nye Tape instead of a boring one with the English accent. (No offense to ppl with English accents.)

  42. Snickers says:

Bill Nye DOES still ROCK UR SOCKS!!!

  43. Cellie says:

Bill Nye = The only one Chuck Norris ever feared.

  44. amanda says:

does anyone even know where you can get the episodes anymore…
this was good television and kids have crapy TV now AKA: Sponge bob *dies a slow death*

  45. B.N. RULES! says:

I remember singing along with the theme song and dancing our little hearts out. We always loved the topic songs at the end, they were hilarious! Ah, the days our teacher was too busy to teach us and put on Bill Nye (B.N.). We always knew because homeroom was right next to science class and we would sing along through the window between the classrooms as well. I’ve seen “Stuff Happens”, and it’s cool too.

  46. jg says:

BILL BILL BILL BILL BN THE SCIENCE GUY! 65!

  47. teehee says:

he’s still on tv. he’s on the planet green channel on a show called “stuff happens.” It’s just as campy as the original and is pretty cool :D
i loved this show as a kid

  48. velcrodots says:

    Beakman!!
We only ever got that over here, but it rocked!
Also I must throw in a vote for the current show Brainiac, love how they blow up caravans hehe

  49. SonicGTR says:

    And I go:
I’m okay. I was just thinking, you know. Why don’t you get me a Pepsi?
    And she goes:
    NO, you’re a mammal!

  50. MJ says:

    NO~! Beakmans world was better!!

  51. 3differentpens says:

I LOVED BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY!
I learnt how to spell and pronounce deoxyribonucleic acid after watching that show!

I wonder what happened to him…

  52. Josh says:

Bill Nye is why I’m studying to become a science teacher right now.

  53. crazy_penguin says:

we still watch bill nye at my high school. we win!

  54. Hopeless Romance says:

Oh my gosh! I LOVE Bill Nye! I saw a Bill Nye Paper Rycycling Kit at Wal-Mart around Christmas and couldn’t help but smile. Shame I didn’t buy it. We still watch him in Science at my school. I always get a little excitied when the teacher tells us were watch Bill. He makes science fun!

  55. wootz says:

LOVE Bill Nye the Science Guy!
He saved me in 8th grade when I didn’t do my science fair project on time. Two days before it was due I saw Bill put a sharpened wooden skewer through a blown-up balloon and it didn’t pop it! And he explained how the structure of the balloon’s latex will allow the skewer to be pushed through without tearing it. I did my report on that and much to my surprise the teacher was amazed and I got an A! xD

  56. Where's the wiz? says:

Bill Nye was OK, but Mr. Wizard was way better and much cooler! Where’s the Wiz?!

  57. HELLO MOTO says:

  64. Lupin says:

Oh… damn. Now I feel OLD.

And my friends thought I was weird because I picked this over SpongeBob. If only every science teacher could be that awesome….

  65. Anonymous says:

actually now teachers aren’t even allowed to play bill nye because they havent released the show yet, thus any copy they have is “pirated”……

  66. LadyBelle says:

My son was introduced to Bill Nye in school and fell in love with the program. I haven’t found it on DVD yet, but youtube does offer some episodes which my son will track down and watch.

  67. Joel says:

oh man, so much win here. i still watch bill nye in high school advanced science :p

  68. Elisa says:

I WANT TO WATH BILL NYE ALL OVER AGAIN I ALSO WANT 2 WATCH ALL OF HIS VIDEOS THEY ARE GREAT I WISH THEY COULD PLAY THEM ON t.v. AGAIN CAUSE HE RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  69. Anonymous says:

Beakmans world was a million times better than Bill Nye.

  70. raspberry says:

Bill Nye was awesome! We watched his shows constantly even in like high school. My physics teacher from college was actually on the show once to show how a particle accelerator works.

  71. Anonymous says:

Bill Nye is the best! Thank you from tons of kids!

  72. Nora Dallaire says:

Oh, the immense surge of geeky joy I received from seeing this- god! I have to thank you for this reminder. :3

  73. Anonymous says:

He’s due for an epic comeback. Notice his show ends and now all the kids are suddenly little retards and bastards to boot. COME BACK BILL, help our stupid children! (he made an appearance on Stargate Atlantis. did anyone see? EPIC XD)

  74. Komute says:

I learn more from his video and actually remember them, then the crap my teacher taught me, Bill Nye Rules

  75. Ellen says:

They still use the DVDs of this in schools!
even at my gcse level! :p

  76. bomba says:

can anyone else NOT say the name of his show without singing it in their head?

  77. RavPadfoot says:

I mostly remember Bill Nye from Almost Live, a show that was legendary in Seattle. He was one of the main actors for the show and one of his skits was “Bill Nye the Science Guy”. I remember when he left the show to start his science show. I never watched the science show as, unlike Almost Live, it was geared towards kids.

  78. Anonymous says:

I knew there’s a reason why I’m a science major… and yes, the theme is permanently stuck in my head from watching it so much.

  79. Mike says:

    That guy was awesome.

Seriously, everyone who has ever heard of Bill Nye and seen an episode wants that show back. It was from him that I learned about liquid nitrogen’s epic freezing effects.

  80. Mike says:

Do not defy the facts from Bill Nye the science guy!

  81. Joan says:

I have my 8th grade students make their own “Bill Nye” videos at the end of the school year. They love it.

  82. Monty Python 4eva says:

I must say, this is by far one of the top three epic wins EVER! I learned more from Bill Nye than I EVER did from all of my teachers combined (I’m a junior in high school), and it’s sad that they don’t show it anymore..or, if they do–I certainly don’t get the channel.

Bill Nye = the shiz XD

  83. Sheep says:

OMG Bill Nye was amazing!! My dad loved that I watched this show because I didn’t really like science but Bill Nye made it awesome =) And I loved the songs at the end (they did one based on “Semi Charmed Kind of Life” by Third Eye Blind which was my favorite!)

  84. Sarhii says:

Bill Nye is the Pimp Shit!! He taught so many kids who hated science all kinds of things. They seriously need to start reruns or put it on DVD I would totally buy that!!

  85. dukethepcdr says:

I loved Bill Nye and the even earlier show Newton’s Apple. I’ve always been curious about how things work ever since I was a little kid so I ate shows like these up.

  86. llc says:

bill nye always went a little too far with everything that he was involved with. most people didn’t mind, but i did.
