The Far Side

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by M Sanchez

We’d love to feature a panel or two of The Far Side for this post, but according to several other sites, it’s a sure-fire way to get a Cease & Desist letter from the creator himself, Gary Larson.

Instead, here’s a couple images from a Photoshop contest at Worth 1000 inspired by The Far Side.

Is The Far Side where LOLcats learned to spell?

  1. Literal says:

My ex-husband is related to Gary Larson. Funny guy!

  2. Literal says:

And yeah, I meant Gary Larson is funny.
    My ex-husband is an a*shole.

  3. KartoonNotWerk says:

The Far Side…my first discovery of it in the newspaper was a milestone! It made me realize that yes, there are others with the same sense of humor I have. This led to me buying every Far Side wall calendar, page-a-day calendar and book that hit the market.

  4. Alex says:

Holy crap, The Far Side is considered nostalgia now?! How dare you make me feel old at age 30! /cry

  5. irishsof says:

    Funniest. Comic. Ever.

  6. Allison says:

My favorite was the one where the mom is telling the boy “Now go to sleep Kevin, or once again I’ll have to knock 3 times and summon the Floating Head of Death”, and you see the dad downstairs with a scary face drawn on a balloon waiting to send it up the side of the house to the boy’s window.
I love it! It’s taped to my fridge right now.

  7. Allison says:

My hubby’s favorite is where the bears are peeking around a tree and see campers sleeping in sleeping bags and one says to the other “Oh Look. Sandwiches!”

  8. faetal says:

I had a tshirt in highschool I wore for PE, it had two deer on the front, one had a bullseye on his chest. both are looking at it…
below the caption read “Bummer of a birthmark Hal”
    i loved that shirt

  9. superdupes says:

calvin and hobbes > far side

  10. D.R. says:

That was good. I never looked at cows the same way afterwards.

  11. Corrine says:

    Best. Comic. Ever.

  12. Katie says:

Been reading the Far Side since I could read. My dad says that it f*cked me up. ;D

  13. Hello, computer says:

    Total classic.

  14. dadevster says:

I totally just read my first Far Side comic in years today. And now this. Is it a sign???

  15. dernjg says:

clearly one of the biggest warping influences for me in making http://www.hellowithcheese.com

  16. Hell Hath No Fury says:

I soo have that book, and the crash-test dummies, and the mummies, etc
    loooove

  17. Nepentheia says:

I absolutely adore the Far Side. Fantabulous comic!!!

And yes, “fud” has been the proper spelling for food in my family’s household for decades now! ;-)

You know when someone’s a real fan of the Far Side when you mutter some obscure quote from a comic and they get the reference. Great bonding moment, for sure! :-D

  18. Ashlyn says:

I even HAD this particular book. I literally read it to shreds, bought a new copy, then my daughter read the new one to shreds. Loved Gary Lawson.

    • Musicmom870 says:

What is it with them falling apart!!!?? Kidding, of course, mine were loved to pieces, and replaced.
My favorite was the spiders building a huge web at the bottom of the slide, with the fat kid about to go down and one spider says to the other “If we can pull this off we’ll dine like kings!”

  19. stevop87 says:

I totally have this in my room along with a few other volumes!
    Larson is the best!

  20. kr0w says:

    Boneless.
    Chicken.
    Farm.

C&H and FarSide are guidebooks for two different stages of life. C&H gives us all the best ideas as kids, and Farside points out the dark hilarity we may miss as we grow older.

    • Vi31 says:

I had the t-shirt with the kid at the Riverdale (?) School for the Gifted, and he’s pushing on the pull door. I wore that t-shirt out. I even painted it on the wall of one of my dorms in college. Wonder if it’s still there.
Good comparison, kr0w. If I weren’t an atheist, I would think that Gary Larson is God and Bill Waterston is Jesus, but now I think I just came up with people to worship on a daily basis.

      • Vi31 says:

Oh yeah, in the container of cat “food” in our house, it is labled “cat fud” – right by the dryer.

      • MommaKitty says:

Wasn’t it the Midvale School for the Gifted? I bought the tee shirt for my Dad maybe 5 years ago. It is definitely my Dad’s favorite Gary Larson comic. I know that every time I or someone around me does something “gifted” i think about it. The Midvale School is where my family declares such people are alumis

        • Vi31 says:

Yes, Midvale! Thank you!! (Hey, the cat that my parents owned when I was born 31.999 years ago was named Mama Kitty.)

  21. Della says:

I always assumed that the Far Side was where LOLcats/ICHC got the idea of how animals spelled.

Too many good ones to pick an actual fave but the cat fud sign on dryer is a definite standout.

  22. JessicaMarie says:

I have this book! I was just reading it yesterday. I got it when I was 8 or 9 I think from my cousin. Amazing that its on here!

  23. failious says:

Copyright fail: I think Worth1000.com images are also not supposed to be reproduced =0(

  24. Hopeless Romance says:

I discovered the Far Side when I was 12 and instantly fell in love. I have the 9th book and I read it everytime I’m feeling down. I think my favorite is the one with the wolves shoving ducks up their nose with the caption saying something about snorting quack. xD

    • Anonymous says:

Gad, that has to be one of my favorites, along with the bear pressing his head to a hubcap and saying “Oooh, i can hear the traffic!” Genius.

  25. leslie says:

god how i miss gary larson

  26. llc says:

what can i say about gary larson – i wish he were still making this cartoon. such an interesting perspective on life and animals.

  27. The Far Side Guy says:

As you can probably tell by my name, I LOVE THE FAR SIDE :D
