Epic Win: Scratch n Sniff Stickers

Submitted by A Trammel
Remember how these were like special occasion stickers and only showed up on your really good papers/homework?
However, what we really want to know is: who on Earth thought that synthetic fried chicken smell on a sticker was something that anyone wanted to scratch, let alone sniff? The mind boggles.
What was your favorite sticker? Tell us in the comments.

Watermelon. Strawberry was pretty good, too.
I loved the watermelon one. The strawberry never smelled like real strawberries, though, it always smelled like that generic strawberry shampoo my mother bought by the frickin’ gallon.
You know, like the smelly markers, I think you can still buy offshoots of these at Micheal’s or Hobby Town.
OOOH, I also remember getting these when I did well in school. The teacher’d put them on 100’s.
Good times.
The cowboy boot must have been for kids who failed. D:
In class we always hoped someone would get the scooper pooper one, or the skunk.
I still have an original sheet of these in my closet! I think they are from 3rd grade…
My favorite was the gasoline one.
OMG
My fav was “fresh cut grass”
Had a sticker book for all my stickers, from my scratch and sniff to my metalic Michael Jackson glove !!!
Loved stickers in the 80s !!!!
Me too! I loved stickers. Each kind had their own page in my book. One for Scratch N Sniff, one for Fuzzies, one for the plastic Puffy stickers.
Yes. I had a huge sticker book, too.
The metallic ones were so pretty, but the fuzzies were the best.
I was so disappointed to find out that my parents threw out my sticker collection when they moved. I never thought to bring it with me. Loved the puffy ones, too!
I remember my sticker book it was filled from page to page with stickers.
i found some of these scratch and sniff stickers awhile ago when i was moving old things, and they were dill pickle scent…….idk how i loved these when i was little.
Buttered Popcorn was the best
These stickers remind me of my sister’s orthodontist. Everytime she had to see him, we always got one. He had toys and free video arcade games in the waiting room.
The strawberry “Berry Good” one is the one I remember the most. And the heart one smelled like cinnamon Red Hots.
My favorite was “Pizza.” Basically it smelled like oregano. YUM
>scritchy scritchy<
oooo I forgot about that one, twas definitely a favorite of mine.
Popcorn. I can smell it now….
Mmmmmm….
Popcorn was my fav too!
Ooo! yeah! the popcorn ones were fuuuuuuuuullllll of buttery goodness. The peppermint ones were pretty nice, too.
My sticker collection was both vast and varied. I liked puffies and fuzzies, but does anyone else remember the “squishies?” The ones that had the oily stuff in them so that they changes color and pattern when you pressed on them?
Those were my holy grail, lol
Do I ever remember those “squishies”, though we called them “Water Stickers”
They were definitely the most coveted of all the stickers.
OMG i forgot all about those !! HA lmao
Those were totally radical
“Special occasion,” bah! My parents were elementary school teachers so I had tons of these at my disposal. Same for the scented markers, come to think of it.
I miss them. I think popcorn was my favorite.
grape, definitely grape.
OH, another grape favoritor! I loved the grape ones. I had a page in my sticker book just for the grape scratch and sniff stickers. Another page was dedicated to my Strawberry Shortcake ones. They also smelled fruity.
I wanna know what kinda jerks don’t like smelly stickers!
the cupcake one that says happy birthday…. oh how i adored that one.
Wow, these were great! I miss them. I really wish they would make a comeback. I’d buy them all over again!
I don’t know, it might be like how Monopoly does their board games today; trying to mimic pop culture. Making smells based on McDonalds, CocaCola, and some celebrity.
Lol, they still make them. My kid’s brought home TONS of Spelling Tests with them on it.
Mello Smello still makes them! You can order at http://www.everythingsmells.com/stickers.html.
ahh! thankyou so much!
I’m forcing my students to experience my blast from the past.
So that one days I can be that crazy English teacher who gave out awesome stickers on spelling tests!
Hey, English teacher, use proper grammar.
My favs were the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ones that smelled like pizza.
I loved these stickers! We used to trade them and put them in our sticker books. I think I actually still have a few of these in a book in a box somewhere.
omg, popcorn. i can still feel the scritch of the paper under my fingernails…
*inhales deeply*
i loved the grape, popcorn, and pizza one the plum one scared me a little bit..
I loved getting the strawberry for good homework!
I loved the grape toast one and wierdly enough, the skunk one
Oh, I loved the skunk one, too! I think my 3rd grade teacher let us pick which one we wanted, and I always picked that one.
OMG! I liked that one too! I still enjoy the light smell of skunk, like when one wanders across the road an hour before you drive by.
Skunk was one of my favorites, too! My aunt was a teacher, and every so often she would take me to the local “secret teacher shopping spot” to pick out a few packages for myself! This thread really brings backt he memories!
Okay, I’m glad it’s not just me. The skunk was also my favorite! I can smell it now…
OMG, the skunk one ruled! I would get my friends to cover their eyes then we would scratch and sniff and let them guess what the smell was. SURPRISE!
And the grass one had a pic of a pot leaf on it. I didn’t understand when I was young(I led a sheltered life I guess). LOVED the popcorn one as well.
My teacher used to put stickers from this same set on good homework! The most random one smelled like ham. And, I mean, it smelled EXACTLY LIKE HAM. It was awesome. I think I still have all those stickers saved somewhere, because I’d peel them off the assignments and arrange them on one page in the back of my notebook, as was the style at the time. Anyway, I tore that page out and saved it for YEARS because of that stupid ham sticker. I bet it’s still around here somewhere.
…do they still make these? I’m told Mello Smello made some that smelled like gasoline and martinis.
My cousin put sheets of these all over his bedroom door, and when he finally graduated my aunt and uncle had to replace the door. Those stickers would not come off, and if you know my aunt and uncle, the would’ve never had the idea just to buff and repaint/refinish the door.
Favorite? happy birthday and popcorn. Ever try a Buttered Popcorn Jelly Belly? even better.
OMG, I remember the epic fights that happened over the sticker books. I was the “weirdo” who wasn’t really into collecting the stickers, but I still remember them. These girls would getting into hair pulling tirades over who got what and who didn’t have the “coolest” ones yets.
I just sat to the side and played with the smelly markers. Heh Heh, Epic Win!! btw, I loved the popcorn and the peach scented.
The company who used to make these are still in business and they are a customer of the company I work for. I soooo wish they still made these. I could totally get free ones!!
My fav: Skunk…and I don’t know why!!
these and ziggy stickers helped me potty train XD
rootbeer float was the best sniff sticker!
welll, u no hao u killl a dum bloond?
smellee stiicker @ bottom of pool!!!
Strawberry was by far the best scratch n’ Sniff sticker around.
My dentist would let me pick a sticker after my appointment.
I’d usually pick one of those. C:
i really liked the leather ones. also leather scented markers. mm… new car smell…
I liked the “Fantastic” Rainbow one the best… It smelled like soap! I also liked the popcorn and pizza ones…. I had the huge stucker album too.. I remember the day I got a “real” sticker album for my birthday at the Sanrio store in Pittsburgh…It had the laminated pages so the stickers could be easily removed.. Before that I had my old Trapper Keeper from 2nd grade with plastic page protectors in the binder as the pages….
Is it bad that decades later I still remember what these smelled like?
My Teacher used BOTH the scratch and sniff stickers And the scented markers.
You Rocked Mrs. Walker!
To me the 1st grade smells like fake grapes and strawberries.
Hustler mag. had a scratch and sniff issue. No I did not buy one, was too young…but I wanted to:)
OM Goodness! That’s brought back a memory! I had most of them in my sticker album…we used photo albums..the ones that had like the self adhesive plastic and every lunch hour we would sit there and trade stickers. Puffed up ones were always worth more than flat ones…and ones with googly eyes were worth the most!
I had these exact ones!!!!!!!!!1
oooh i remember these!! i had a sticker book. my FAVES were the puffy stickers. when i was five, i used to love poking them, hehe. i’d scratch the smelly ones till all the smell was gone
my most memorable one was rotten fish!
Birthday cake. I collected stickers and I still have them, and birthday cake still has its smell. Mmmm!
This was better than actual drugs.
I had a sticker collection book full of Lisa Frank stickers, and the scratch and sniff ones.
My favorite was the pancake+syrup one (smelled like sugar) with popcorn being a close second.
I worked for Trend Enterprises (who created the first scratch and sniff stickers, and produced the set shown here) early in the “Stinky Stickers” era, in fact I was the one who made and added the copyright line you see on each of those stickers.
About the “Fried Chicken” sticker: The stickers were covered by 3M micro-baloons, usually containing the actual material you were supposed to smell. According to one of the artists (hi, Kathy!) the the first prototype batch of “Fried Chicken” the oil used wet rancid during or after processing. The smell experienced was best described as “worm sweat” according to her. It took about three or four tries to get that scent to work out acceptably.
I may be insane, but I think I once encountered a scratch-n-sniff-n-lick. It would have been around 1981… the flavor was a spice of some kind, IIRC it was a turkey sticker and the smell/taste was poultry seasoning.
The worst part being that the sticker was not mine, some kid was showing it off at school and we all got to try it. (first grade)
It probably should have been called “scratch-n-sniff-n-lick-n-catch a virus”.
I liked the pop corn one . . . but here’s the real question . . . why hasn’t someone reissued these things? They’d make a million just off of us 70s and 80s kids buying them for our own children.
I love these! Our teachers still use these! I always liked the peppermint one…
My favorite was the bubblegum machine one.
The smell was orgasmic.
You can still buy the ones shown from:
http://www.trendenterprises.com/home.cfm
Hey! Is it just me, or does the art on the stickers look Schoolhouse-Rock-esque? [BTW: Schoolhouse Rock should definitely be a Nostalgic Win]
CHOCOLATE!!! I can still smell those…
I remember liking the smell of the strawberry ones, but I can’t exactly remember the smell of the stickers. As weird as that sounds, I can recall the pickle kind perfectly. That sticker smelled EXACTLY like pickles.
dill pickle. hands down.
Would that make you a “pickle sniffer”?
I was really into collecting the Scratch N’ Sniff stickers – I had a couple of albums of them and used to trade for the most “rare.” I remember the “Dry Martini” (good product to market to kids) was coveted. But I have no idea what happened to those albums – they just disappeared, and I’m a real pack rat – I have lots of other “nostalgic” stuff, but I never figured out what happened to my sticker collection.
I have several De-Vine and Oh-Oh stickers from 1989. They’re battered and scratched, but THEY STILL SMELL.
I had forgotten that I had a sticker book as a kid until I read this. My favorite scratch and sniff sticker was the buttered popcorn. My least favorite was the loaf of pumpernickel bread.
I liked strawberry mmmmmmm
PICKLE! I just dug out my old stickerbook and am happily scratching and sniffing away as I speak! LOL And I am AMAZED that they still work after more than 20 years!
it was a sheep that smelled of banana =)
Ha! I still have my scratch and smell from kindergarden! I’m almost 30 years old and my sticker still smells like grapes!
In third grade, my teacher would put a different sticker on every page from our daily journal. I remember going through and just smelling my favorites over and over again, because it was just such an awesome concept for paper to smell GOOD.
If I hadn’t seen this, I probably wouldn’t have remembered. This site is the win.
I’ve never actually seen one in person in my entire life ]: /.
I guess the people who gave it a thumbs down were the ones in class that never got a smelly sticker
My favorite was also the skunk and the peppermint one.
hWooo hoo! I was lucky number 3000. These stickers are rad
im a 90s kid
i remember i had a caramel sticker somewhere
*mouth waters* it smelt yumy
These were quite popular when I was teaching – and apparently the upper grade kids were mad that the cool 4th grade teacher gave them out to her class, because my stash of them went missing and I found them on the stairs leading from my classroom to the upstairs area behind the 7th & 8th grade classroom. Never caught the culprits, but have some pretty good ideas who the thieves were!
And the boys liked to get the skunk ones! The pizza scent always gagged me.
Awesome, I have most of these (still have my sticker book lol).. My favorite though was the car tire smell. I think that just makes me weird
CCCCOOOOOOOOOKKKIEEE!!!!!!!
Dill Pickle!!!
I found a couple of those stickers from when I was about six. I used to love the grape stickers and I hated the birthday cake sticker.
Mello Smello were the best scratch-and-sniffs. I used to get them all the time from Circle K (which they don’t have here…they have them out west!) and I have about a dozen from ‘85 or so. They still smell RRALLY strongly, too!
A favorite is the XMas wreath…pine.
I was flipping through a journal I had in High-school and noticed a grape scratch n sniff sticker on a page. With a gentle scratch it still smelled like grape! I put that sticker there in 1993!!
i want to know what they used to make these stickers smell like this.
The fried chicken one never smelled like fried chicken…
