Epic Win: Nintendo Zapper

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by D DeRonde

The original Zapper for “Wild Gunman” was awesome:

Mighty realistic looking too, so when the Zapper was released in the U.S., it became the version you see at the top of the page. We can understand why, but still. That is one cool shoot ‘em up toy!

The Zapper was unique, according to Wikipedia:

The Zapper is perhaps unique as it is the only NES accessory to have its own accessory; QuickShot released a gray plastic scope that snaps onto the Zapper’s existing rear sight. It does not contain any optics, rather it is simply a tube with crosshairs. This item, especially when new-in-box, has become hard to find and is highly prized by collectors.

What do you call that? A Zapwii? Wiiper? We have no idea.

  1. Spore says:

    For real, this was awesome.
    I did not have one.
    Really Cool.
    Smashing Action Toy.
    Tetris?

    And what spells that? :D

    • Katie says:

You didn’t have one? Awww. But then you didn’t get to know the joy of being ridiculed by a pixelated mutt.

    • Jiddi says:

When my now-ex-wife and I started dating, she thought that she was the top gun (pun Nintendoed) with Duck Hunt. That is, until she challenged me to a game. Then a second and a third. None of the games were even close. I guess she didn’t understand that I was still fresh out of the Marines.

Maybe that is why she is my ex-, eh?

  2. nightlyeclipse says:

    Duck Hunt anyone?

  3. Alex says:

Oh dude I WANNA make my own fiber-optic Wiiper out of a Wiimote and old zapper! Cool! Now…just got to get another zapper and wiimote…not gonna sacrifice my own.

  4. Onion says:

The most epic win so far in my book. Also because I still have one, along with two NES ^^. Only down side is that it doesn’t work on LCD tvs.

    • Allison says:

Say what?! What doesn’t work on LCD tvs? The zapper or the NES? Because we still paly the NES. My kids feel special because they have a video game system that their friends don’t have, and they all want to play it when they come over. Duck Hunt is their favorite!
I like the scope in the picture. I wish I had that!

      • Bimmy says:

Yeah, unfortunately the Zapper doesn’t work on modern, flat-screen TVs. But I’ve heard rumors that holding it up to a lightbulb and pulling the trigger might work.

/the Wii is perfect for these types of games

  5. Elly says:

Awesome. Always makes me think of this now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swb_sN75fbY

  6. Wimple says:

We had the original NES waaaay back in the early 80s – it came with the zapper and also a robot that you had to remote control to then control other stuff. It was very difficult, and was phased out quickly. Wish I still had all that!

    • Alex says:

I think you had it in the mid-80’s, since the NES was released in 1985. :)

That is assuming you had the NES and not the Family Computer (the Japanese version of the NES) that came out in 1983.

Either way, that’s still at least24 years ago now…sheesh.

    • TColoske says:

dude, if what you say is true, you had one of the original R.O.B’s. this is like THE collectors item now that Nintendo made him a character in Brawl. it would have been worth some major bucks if you still had it

  7. PFCblue says:

Wii Zap, dur. Random completely-unrelated-i-frickan-swear sidenote: I used to walk around with my Zapper’s cord tucked into my pocket playing Robocop. Yea, it was good.

  8. Desi says:

Is it me or has he had that Wii remote surgically attached to his arm?

  9. Yoshi says:

Pretty sure the wii one is fake

    1) Things that plug into the wiimote attach in the BACK

    2) The remote isn’t attached to his arm at all….

  10. carl says:

    it’s obvious, it’s a zipper

  11. Lilly says:

My brother and I had a Nintendo Zapper. We spent many happy hours trying to shoot the goddamn Duck Hunt dog. Everything about Duck Hunt was win except the stupid freaking dog. >:(

Josh has this theory that if somebody made a game where you can shoot the stupid dog, they’d make millions and millions.

  12. ascatal says:

oh so many memories of Duck hunt , we had the newer orange version of the zapper after the law past that made all toy guns have to have the orangeonthem to distingish them from the real thing, and i had a damned realistic looking AK-47 toy gun as a kid, never saw that scope thing for it though , wishi would have had one XD

  13. D.R. says:

The guy on the bottom looks like he invented a new way to be a heroin addict.

  14. METALFAN says:

It should be called the zappii!

  15. Asbduhas says:

Check it out! These guys microwave one of these!

  16. monkeyman says:

The zapper looked even cooler when yo took off the light gray outer shell. Sort of like the gun from “Robocop.”

  17. Meredith says:

I had the first one. Also…gellooooo…power glove anyone?!

  18. RiderLeangle says:

I call it what the Wii Zapper should have been!

  19. WarDragon says:

We had the orange one, but I broke it -.-’ it got glued though. I think it still works =D

  20. obviologist says:

I know what I would call the Wiimote/Zap Gun… the WAP or possibly the Wiip

  21. Otakutom says:

Still have the original gray zapper…and I still play Duck Hunt on a regular basis

Oh…Gotcha: The Sport, too…one of the original paintball games

  22. Sarhii says:

The only bad thing about this gun is that you couldnt shoot that damn dog!!!!!

  23. llc says:

wild idea that didn’t work very well as i recall.
