Epic Win: Stand By Me

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by J Moore

This is one of our favorite movies, and as an added bonus, it’s based on a short story by one of our favorite authors, Stephen King. You can find that in his book “Different Seasons” if you haven’t read it.

One of the best moments in this movie is the epic tale of Lardass Hogan and the pie-eating contest:

How many of us have never looked at blueberry pie the same way after seeing that?

  1. bspinky says:

aww look its a chubby Jerry O’Connell! *giggles* (first? :o )

    • Katie says:

I remember being so phenomenally grossed out by that scene. The funny part is that I normally read most Stephen King stories without being bothered in the least little bit. (Rereading The Shining right now as a matter of fact.)

  2. Tonights says:

I heard Stephen King read “The Tale of Lardass Hogan” aloud at Radio City Music Hall. It was pretty much the highlight of my life.

    Stand By Me ftw.

  3. Anonymous says:

it was a barf a rama! :0 i love this movie!

  4. Spanky says:

Dude, he went from fat-camp refugee to swiping Rebecca Romijn…got to love a story like that. Who ever thought at the time that the Feldmeister would have less of a career than Jerry O’Connel and Wesley Crusher?

  5. Monster says:

    BOOMER!

  6. faetal says:

I love this movie… even now that I’m older and can see the darker context for what it is. I found it in the cheapie movie stack at Walmart on DVD a couple months ago… the VHS has been crapping out on me for years.

  7. anna_in_pdx says:

This was filmed in rural Oregon. I saw it in the theater, it was a GREAT movie. My kids love it as well, it has really held up well.

  8. Ceridwen says:

Absolutely brilliant movie! Stand By Me was my Goonies (I saw Goonies when I was already in my mid-late teens).
And – dare I say it? – I had a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge crush on Wil Wheaton back then.

Does anybody else feel like me about Stephen King films – with the exeption of The Green Mile, I always end up loving the ones based on his short stories/novellas (Stand By Me, Shawshank Redemption) way more then the novel-based ones (Misery, It,…).

  9. Allison says:

This has got to be one of my all-time favorite movies ever. My parents took us to see it in the movie theater in 1986! I was 6! Sis was 10! Little bro was 4!
And I still to this day appreciate my parents’ bad judgement call that night. There will never be a story/movie that compares to the adventure the characters went on in this story. EPIC WIN!

  10. boaks says:

We got to watch this in my Developmental Psych class in college! Best excuse to watch a movie everrrr.

  11. tiredgirl says:

love this movie! how could anyone vote it down?

  12. MommaKitty says:

Of all the funny things to run across. My boyfriend has the cherry pez quote as a tattoo. Seeing that quote just about every morning and night isn’t so out of place for me but this is the only other perfect place for it outside of the movie for me.
    P.S.
Entertaining fact, look at the time frame for this movie and then look at the date of introduction of cherry pez.
    TTFN

  13. dejaface says:

the guy who played Lardass Hogan, Andy Lindberg, was my boss for a while. I knew him as Walrus, though. (:

  14. crystaldragon says:

I remember watching that screen for the first time. I puke my guts out after that.

  15. TabyQat says:

    Awwww *teary Eyed*

This was my altime favourite movie growing up. I would hire it out and watch it three times a day on holidays (Yes I can be obsessive) I LOVED River Phoenix.

I bought the VHS when I was teeen and memorised every goof. Then my brother bought me a DVD copy for my 21st. They cleaned up alot of the errors in the DVD sadly.

I put it on again just the other day for a bit of Nostalgia.

    Loves.

  16. Julianne Baker says:

Rob Reiner, who directed this movie, was a friend of Stephen’s and one of the characters was based on him, also his production company Castlerock, is named after the fact that Stephen used the fictitious town Castle Rock in a lot of his stories!!!

I love this film and short story, The Body. Stephen King is a God!!!! Seeing River in it makes me so sad, especially the end when his character, Chris Chambers, fades out of picture at the end, premonition of his life maybe?

  17. Aeyvi says:

i havent seen this movie… and they chose THAT scene as a memorable moment? i may not see the whole thing now.

    • Allison says:

      Please see the movie! Please!
This scene is Gordy telling the boys one of his stories around a campfire. Gordy’s struggle throughout the movie was that he was a talented writer, and his brother the football player was his dad’s favorite. And he was worried about losing his friends in school once they went to shop class and he went into writing classes.
The rest of the movie is not like this Pie-Eating scene. There’s drama, sadness, humor, adventure. It’s great! Give it a chance!

    • Siava says:

It’s one of the funniest scenes in the movie. It sounds gross, but the way it’s told and acted is classic. The rest of the movie is great and not at all like that one scene. You’ll just have to watch it to know what I mean. ;)

  18. Jessie says:

    That made my entire day
“A fat lady barfed in her purse”
    is my favorite part!!!

  19. Monica says:

    RIVER PHOENIX<3333
    RIP

  20. Leffe says:

Best movie ever, no question about it.

  21. teenie says:

BOOM ba ba BOOM ba ba BOOM ba ba…

  22. Charlotte says:

One of my favourite ever films! Love it, love it, love it!
And Wil Wheaton – definitely a hottie. Still is. I’m lame enough to be following him on Twitter… Maybe I shouldn’t share that kind of information…

  23. TeratoMarty says:

My father and I had certain movies that we would watch over and over again. Holy Grail, Moonstruck, Full Metal Jacket and this one. I miss the old man, and this movie is even more win for reminding me of Thursday nights on the couch with him.

  24. ac says:

    great movie

  25. Grace says:

    Boombaba boombaba boombaba boombaba

  26. Elissa says:

Fantastic movie. I just watched it again with my husband not too long ago. He’d never seen it, and he was floored by it. It’s completely different watching it as an adult vs. as a teen.

  27. inkspell23 says:

i’ve never seen this movie before until i read this OUAW entry and i must say, it is one of the best movies i have ever seen. its amazing how well those young boys are at acting. i’m not really that old, but some of the things on here that i’ve seen i remember as a little kid…and i’m still a kid lol

  28. Mega says:

The kid playing Lardass Logan (not Hogan) is River Phoenix’s brother. They padded him up a lot to play Lardass. He also has a small role with River at the beginning of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. They have the same distinctive upturned nose.

  29. TJ says:

The part where they found the dead kid seriously freaked me out. (He was missing his nose!) I still won’t watch it.

    • Allison says:

Say what?! I’ve watched that 1000 times and never noticed a missing nose! I just thought he had a bloody nose.
Damn. Now I’m gonna have to shove my kids out to school faster so I can watch it when they’re gone…….

  30. Snobahr says:

I got a ticket to that movie while I was in high school. They were handing out passes just off campus for a free screening. I have since learned that what I got passes to was a test screening, because we had to fill out survey cards. I didn’t care – FREE MOVIE! When I saw it again once it was generally released, I found that the leech scene had been seriously re-edited, and stuff I thought was great was removed. I don’t remember /what/ was so great, anymore. Haven’t seen that movie in years.

  31. Dawn says:

Hmm… I still teach this to my high school kids. Strangely their favorite bit is when the boys nearly get smooshed by the train. I like the complete and utter barf-o-rama the best.
Their activity to start the film unit is to describe a “complete and utter barf-o-rama”. Sadly their lack of imagination makres me cry! hehe

  32. Rena says:

I love this movie. The pie scene is so insanely gross, and as was the scene with the leeches. And I loved how the dead body wasn’t over the top gorey, yet you could barely look at the screen. I remember the first time I saw this movie. I had such a huge crush on River Phoenix. This movie is one of the best.

  33. Stephen says:

The pie-eating contest and leech scenes were wholly transformative for me.

  34. llc says:

classic film, but too much focused on negative ideas like premature death.

  35. ClariPossum says:

Oh, so THAT’S where that barf scene came from. I remember it, but hadn’t a clue what movie it was in. It was one of those things I only saw snippets of as a kid.
