Epic Win: Wooly Willy

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by M Monderer

Remember Wooly Willy, one of the saviors of long car trips with family?

There was also one for the girls, Hair-Do Harriet:

You could make her a pretty spectacular beehive! Not quite Amy Winehouse huge, more like Flo from “Alice” huge. Ah, memories. Between these, Mad Libs, and Walkmans, peace could be kept until at least the first rest stop.

» 32 Blasts From The Past

  1. Literal says:

I got these as gifts from one of my uncles when I was a child.
He smelled weird and liked me to sit on his lap while I played with this toy … hmmm.

    • Katie says:

      You too?!

LOL. No, seriously though, before I understood the power of magnetism I thought these things were the coolest toy ever. At least for the first ten minutes. Then I got bored and cut open the plastic part to let all the metal shavings out. My mother was *pissed*.

      • Hell Hath No Fury says:

yeahhh….and my poor bunny ate some. no long-term damage, but metal shaving in a tongue must really suck, a rabbit running around with it’s tongue hanging out is hilarious, though.

  2. Puppatoons says:

This is wild. I just found my old WW in my basement yesterday, and here it is on the puter! Yes, awesome, awesome toy.

  3. remolay says:

I bought one of these at a dollar store once.

    It broke.
    quickly.

    Pretty cool though

  4. Featherlight910 says:

i remember when this shit would get all over the house when it broke

  5. Rebecca C. says:

I just saw one of these a the bookstore this afternoon! I tried to use it by holding the packages together because they were both still wrapped. Didn’t quite work.

  6. Clownfish says:

If you’re Australian or British, the idea of a game called “Woolly Willy” is absolutely hilarious.

You see, to us a “willy” is childish slang for a penis.

You can bet we laughed our arses off at the Goonies, and the treasure of One-Eyed Willy.

    • Puppatoons says:

I always had a good “teehee” at that name whenever I saw the movie. Naughty!

    • Amy says:

We have the same slang here in the U.S. My reaction to seeing this entry was to boggle a bit… I remember seeing the toy before but either mine was an imitation with a different name or I was too young at the time to get it.

    • Hell Hath No Fury says:

We definitely know what One-Eyed Willy means. Every fifth-grade boy had to remind us every day. I was shocked to hear it, as an adult, on The Goonies, too, esp knowing that was my favorite movie, and here I am watching it with my teenage sisters….*awkward moment*

  7. Anonymous says:

I’ve been sick and my mom just gave me a little travel sized Wooly Willy to cheer me up (please note I’m 27 and have played with these before). I’ve never seen Hair Do Harriet. She looks like Liza Minelli (http://www.bubbygram.com/performers/liza.jpg).

  8. UrsulaWishin says:

Not only do I remember Wooly Willy, But they were – and still are – made in my hometown (Smethport, PA!!). I’m even good friends with the guy – Jim Herzog – that invented Willy and his ilk. I gave out Wooly Wiilys as a gift at my wedding!

  9. Marcos says:

Plus, these things were what inspired the inventor of Magna-Doodle. So the win was played forward..

  10. regularg0nz0 says:

    Loved him on Family Guy.

  11. jenej says:

Uhh…did anyone else notice how she looks EXACTLY like liza minelli? She even looks just as high! Nice!!

  12. Cam says:

Is there no imature people or am I the only one to draw a penis on the head?!?!

  13. Kuraiite says:

Wooly Willy was on That 70s show tonight!

  14. PleaseDon'tGoGirl says:

I had one of these too – as well as one…(haha – fits in w/the “willy” thread)…with magnetic balls!

  15. Ivy says:

you can get draw a beaver here in NZ. Its like the not so PG-version of this

  16. Omg says:

Omg I loved this thing when I was younger, holy shit.

  17. Angela says:

I keep one in my desk drawer at work! Perfect for those slow days!!!

  18. brien says:

and they have been available again in the last couple of years-I got them for my kids after not seeing them for at least 35 years

  19. Ai Nan says:

Wooly Willy… What kind of a name for a kid’s toy is that?!

  20. llc says:

what an odd concept, never should been created.
