Epic Win: Labyrinth

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by R Russell

Two words sum up why this is an Epic Win: DAVID BOWIE.

The clip below was probably our first exposure to psychedelics, and we had NO idea! Ah, youth…

No mention of Bowie’s epic crotch?

    • emily says:

His epic crotch bulge needs it’s own “Once Upon A Win” entry.

Oh lordy do I love this movie =^-^= right up there with The Neverending Story and The Dark Crystal.
I thank my older sister who exposed by 6 year old noggin’ to these movies of which I now dig out of the 5$ dollar bin at Wal-Mart….I can still watch them right?

      Right?

      • rofldiva says:

I thought it would be more prudent to leave the Epic Crotch to the comments! :)

      • Bugg says:

Of course you can still watch em!
It’s how I came to own Labyrinth and Dark Crystal =D
Sadly,I do not own The Neverending Story yet :(
I personaly think that everyone needs to see these movies and be exposed to the epicness,it makes people awesome lol.
And exposure needs to start as young as possible,to ensure the awesomeness sticks.
Sadly, kids my age really don’t watch this stuff. (I’m 17)

And I totally agree, his epic crotch needs it’s own entry lol. :)

        • emily says:

Ha I am 19 years old and I own all three movies xD

5$ in the bargain bin mwuahaha.

          • Bugg says:

Gah,I sooo envy you,I really want The Neverendign Story.
It’s like my favorite movie, well that aaaand The Rocky Horror Picture Show lol.

          • Rachel says:

Im turning 20 and i just bought the Anniversary Edition of Labrynth, the 2 disc set at blockbuster for 30 bucks.
            WORTH. EVERY. PENNY.

these movies dont deserve to be in the 5 dollar bin, seeing as it took me 4 years to find Labrynth on DVD.

      • Val says:

I am RIGHT THERE WITH YOU emily. my first crush was David Bowie. I was probably about 8 when this movie came out, but I wanted to BE Jennifer Connolly. She’s a really great actress now, but I wasnt sure after this movie… really campy acting in some parts. LOL who cares? ;)

  2. Sir VG says:

I need to watch this movie again. It’s been a while.

  3. Little Walken says:

Nothing like putting on tights and singing David Bowie songs to all your stuffed animals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYtpNBqmL-c

  4. Elissa says:

I love this movie. I was exactly the right age for it when it came out, and it embodied all my teenage fantasies: magic, adventure, sexy badboy. Though I still resent the message that we have to eventually grow up. I continue to resist.

But the real Epic Win-ness of this movie requires four words: David Bowie, and Jim Henson. What would this movie be without Ludo and Didymus and the Fireys, and even that cute little caterpillar at the beginning.

Sigh. Like Sir VG, I really need to watch this again….

  5. Where can I get me some of that fruit?

I got this DVD for Christmas. Thank goodness, it had been missing from my collection for much too long.

  6. Sprite101 says:

Jennifer Connelly is so hot in this movie… *drools*

  7. Ashlyn28 says:

Not only did I absolutely love this movie, but I named my daughter after the lead female character. She has seen the movie several times as well, and loves not only the movie, but the fact that she sees her namesake all the time.

Every time I put it on, she says, “there’s the girl I got my name from”. Yeah, she’s a bit old to keep saying this now (12), but it’s still cute, and it really means something to her now.

  8. D.R. says:

Yes! David friggin’ Bowie. He was an excellent villain. And I loved the songs.

    • HilaryG says:

Bowie really was great in this.
In fact, I think he would have been a PERFECT Phantom from Phantom of the Opera.

      • chatte noir says:

Oh my God, I never even considered that, and I love Labyrinth and POTO…

YES. That is a PHENOMENAL idea!

        • Goblin Queen says:

Hahahaha, I wrote a fanfiction of that crossover, “Jerik” for FF.net
Bowie as The Phantom, Erik….. that would make one kickass Masquerade…

  9. ydobon says:

Who watered the peach tree with acid?

  10. Camero says:

This is one of my all-time favorites! My cousin and I used to rent it EVERY weekend during our weekly sleepovers. Yes, we were only 5 and 7 years old, but it was still awesome…although we had no idea who David Bowie was at the time, and we weren’t sure if Jareth was a man or woman! O_o

  11. Stephanie says:

David Bowie in this movie was my very first crush as a little girl. To this day, I still watch the ballroom in the bubble scene and still think, “No! Don’t run away from him! What are you doing?! GAH!”

  12. Kelly says:

hooray!!!!! today is the best day EVER seeing this one up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

smack that baby & make him pee!!!!!!!!!!! lolololol

    • PommieGirl says:

omg! that was always my favorite line from the movie “smack that baby and make him PEEEE!!) LMFAO! i havent seen this one in a while…guess ill have to break out the old vhs…..wait….dvd bargain bin at walmart u say??????

      • Val says:

I got it for $7 a few weeks ago and have already watched it like 6 times. made my 10 year old (11 today!) sit and watch it with me. Now I just have to replace my copy of Neverending story and I can die happy. ;)

    • uh, wut says:

Actually, it’s “Smack that baby, Make him free!” :l

      • A Nony Moose says:

Actually, it’s “Smack that baby, Make him BREATHE”. You know, like when a baby’s born, the doctor smacks it a couple of times to get it to start BREATHING. BREATHE!! Not “free” and certainly not “pee” – I mean eww! Just EWW!! :P

  13. Ashleigh C says:

My boyfriend bought this movie for me for Christmas.
    Gotta love David Bowie!

    • lolbukkit says:

Aww, my boyfriend got me this movie on DVD for Christmas too! My tape was so old and worn out that he felt sorry for me. LOL!

  14. MadAriad says:

Timing WIN! It’s David Bowie’s Birthday today!
Plus: WIN I love this movie. In a way it defined a generation.

  15. miroku says:

David Bowie sure was packing in this film. If you know what I mean.

Anyway, I could have done without the baby crying all the time. I know its a part of it, but it annoys me to no end.

    • Cellenna says:

Well, if you were a baby and surrounded by goblins, wouldn’t you cry?! hehe And David Bowie actually does the cooing baby sounds in “Dance Magic.” I have a 20 month old and he loves to sit and watch this with me (and dance with the goblins!). LOVE IT!

  16. MedicDave says:

I just bought this after Christmas, since I saw it on sale at the store. I remember going to the movies to see this, back when it was semi affordable, and you could get popcorn and a drink for less than five bucks. It has been a great addition to my collection of childhood movies that I finally got to purchase as an adult.

  17. Courteney says:

Yes. A movie where David Bowie says “Fun? Fun? Tra la la?” :D

    and of course:

You remind me of the babe…

  18. Kelly says:

    what babe?……:)

  19. MsPurrserker says:

Yes, David Bowie was the Johnny Depp of his generation.

    • Maria says:

He’s far more wonderful than Johnny Depp.
And Johnny Depp’s the one I should have had a crush on, based on my age…
Labyrinth is a fab film; my 8 year-old brother and I love it!
But I’ve made all my friends watch and they hate it.
“It’s so stupid!” “He must’ve been desperate to do something like that…”

However, I think Dark Crystal is a bit rubbishy. Although that is mainly because I thought it was in a box set with Labyrinth because it had David Bowie in too, so I was mega disappointed when I found out it didn’t…

  20. vervain says:

    *eats the fruit*

There’s a manga-style comic out called Return to the Labyrinth for all you hardcore fans out there. Fair warning though–the art is absolutely horrid.

    • shmee says:

I know talk about the disappointment of a life time. I ordered it the moment I heard it was coming out and was so disappointed. Does not do this movie justice.

  21. utaduta says:

one of my favorite movies of my childhood! i wanted to buy it last week, but it was sold out! my sisters and i watched this movie all the time, i think its were my david bowie obsession came from. he is one smokin’ guy!

  22. xilith says:

the technical term for david bowie’s epic crotch is “bowie bulge”

  23. Stephanie says:

Also, now do I not only have to watch Labyrinth today, but I have to watch the episode of Flight of the Conchords where Jemaine dresses up like David Bowie.

  24. Mindy says:

I love this movie, when I was little me and my brother along with our friend use to watch it a lot after our house caught on fire. It was one of the few tapes that didnt melt so we watched it over and over again. It kind of took away the suckyness of living in a motorhome for months

    :)

  25. Ante says:

I could never understand why Sarah said no in this movie.
    ITS FREAKING GODDAMN DAVID BOWIE.

He can my my Goblin King anytime. ;)

  26. MK says:

This movie is awesome. That is all I can say.

  27. Johnny's girl says:

My best friend from the flipside of the country sent me a postcard years ago, with Jareth on it and the quote “Fear me. Love me.”

That postcard is still pinned up next to my computer monitor – I want it near me always!

    • Jane St.Clair says:

My cousin and I prefer the followup, “do as I say and I’ll be your slave” Cracks us up everytime. That and what we refer to as David’s “magic balls”.

  28. Mel says:

The Bog of Eternal Stench! The farting noises when they cross on the rocks still make me laugh.

  29. Emmie says:

Haha! I’m not even from the 80’s and this has to be my favorite movie EVER. The bulge is… a bit distracting, but I WOULD LOVE TO DANCE WITH THE GOLBIN KING. ohhhh my goodness, and the music was to die for. ;w; Never will there be another fantasy movie like this one.

P.S. David Bowie owns my heart. Those mismatched eyes stare into EVERYONE’S soul. /swoon

    • Stef says:

Actually, his eyes aren’t mismatched– he just has a permanently dilated pupil from a pub fight when he was a teen. The irises are the same color. :o )

  30. EarthBoundDancer525 says:

I hadn’t heard of this movie till a co-worker a couple years back told me about it and let me borrow her dvd, and when I watched it I liked it, but I felt an overwhelming creepiness from David Bowie. For some reason he seemed like pervert in love with a little girl and fighting the urges throughout the whole movie. Maybe it was the epic bulge lol.

    Still a great movie though.

  31. T says:

Best movie ever! I watched this for the first time during a youth group movie marathon….Everyone agreed that out of the 10 movies we watched, this was the best BY FAR. Although a guy who is like 30 years old falling in love with a 15 year old is more than a little creepy. But David Bowie’s epic awesomeness makes up for it.

  32. Brinkley says:

Oh lol… what a great movie! My sister was an 80’s kid, so she brought this wonderful movie into my life, and it remains a favorite of mine. A while back, my friend (who also loves the movie… more than i do even!) and I were at the Texas state fair and we passed a fun house with a picture of Jareth painted on the side! We got some pictures and were obligated to look inside. So we forked over six tickets and were utterly disappointed that there was no more labyrinth related art inside…

Anyway, while we are on the subject of names for Jareth’s crotch, might I add that he wears “crowd pleasing pants” into the mix?

  33. CinnamonSpider says:

My friend introduced me to this movie about five years ago (she kept telling me that my feet smelled like the Bog of Eternal Stench) and once she showed it to me, I fell absolutely IN LOVE! It definitely cinched up my already-blossoming David Bowie adoration.

It’s just like Phantom of the Opera though – every time I watch it, I end up yelling at the TV screen: “WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU? DON’T SAY NO! GO WITH HIM!”

  34. Kat says:

Bought it for the kids, and wound up being one of my favorite movies, yes..along with Legend and Neverending Story. I coulda definately danced with the Goblin King! Looked like a great Party!

One rule of life I have learned is: WHEN YOU ARE A GROWNUP- YOU CAN WATCH WHATEVER THE F*** YOU WANT!!

    (Pass the Peaches, Please!)

  35. Bethamphetamine says:

How funny, Mum and I watched this New Year’s Eve. Oh, Bowie. You are way too cool for school. Maybe this is where my secret crush on men with eye make-up comes from. And skinny guys with English accents. “Fear me. Love me. Do as I say and I will be your slave!”

    “OKAY!!!”

  36. Jennifer Lemler says:

Labyrinth has been my favorite movie since i was 6! i can recite all the words and sing all the songs… hell i dont know how many times ive seen it! wow i sound pretty dorky LOL! but i dont care… i would love to wear that dress and dance with the gobin king… LONG LIVE JARETH!

  37. jacidawn says:

A better pair of words: TOBY FROUD. Oh, and BRIAN FROUD. To heck with Bowie. That cute little boy in the red-and-white striped jammies is the star. But you’d probably have to be a fan of Faerieworlds, too. Brian Froud was the conceptual artist and Toby was – well, he was Toby. One of our all-time favorite movies.

One of our all-time favorite movies.

  38. TigerAngel says:

Yes yes yes!! Still one of my absolute favorite movies. I had a rat named Jareth.

I also have a tattoo across my shoulders that says “Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered” and I love it! It always makes me happy when some random stranger sees it and starts quoting the movie.

So many people have no idea what it is and that is just a shame!

  39. Cecona says:

-swoons- aah, Labyrinth…This has been my favorite move since I was like…5. I loved it and watched it all the time. But then my mom had to give my tape to the kids of the guy she was dating. RAGE! I havent been able to buy a new copy since I havent seen any, but not too long ago I torrented it and now have it on my external hard drive for anytime viewing! I had (or more like still have) a HUGE crush on David Bowie’s character, Jareth. I would happily be his goblin queen!

  40. Cecona says:

Fun fact! Yesterday, January 8th, was David Bowie’s birthday. I wont say how old he is now though. It will make people sad.

    • Siava says:

      62. Not bad, actually. He’s still rockin’. :) I watched the Ziggy Stardust concert (1982) last night on Palladia. It was so weird to see him look so young.

  41. MissusMandy says:

Labyrinth is definitely one of the best fantasy movies from the 80’s. David Bowie was completely awesome as Jareth. Jennifer Connoly was perfect for the role of Sarah. What I find sad is that when Jim Henson made this movie, the studio was DISAPPOINTED! And from what I understand it actually was a box office flop! This, along with similar problems with The Dark Crystal, made Jim Henson suffer from a bout of depression.

Hopefully now Jim Henson can look down on us from where ever he may be and see how much he truly touched a generation. I’m now 32 and married and I am lucky enough to own Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal and The Neverending Story and I make sure my kids watch them regularly! >.<

Heh, as for David Bowie’s… assetts… It’s also referred to as David Bowie’s Area. There’s even a website devoted to it. Labyrinth features quite a bit.

  42. Boumama says:

I said it when I was 12, and I say it now, days from 35–Jareth can have BOTH of MY brothers! Lets DANCE! I’d go through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered to get a peek at his–ahem–’Goblin City’….(swoon)

  43. Rachel says:

now for a comment of my own instead of replying to everyone elses.

I want to know how he does that thing with the glass ball, it tripped me out when i was 4 and it tripped me out last week when i watched it. :P lol

    I WANT TO LEARN.

  44. Morgan says:

Man, I totally would’ve stayed with the Goblin King. He’s freakin’ *hot*. Not to mention that the world of the Labyrinth is more interesting than here.

  45. SHAI says:

Chilly down with the Fire Gang!

What’s up with Bowie’s crotch?! Did he get a boner or something?!

  46. Monoxide says:

The labyrinth is the best movie Jim Henson ever made. I have the collectors edition of the movie, and I went as Jareth for Halloween ‘08! /flex/ Only one person knew who I was, and that was at the liquor store we stopped at before the party. She chose Jareth out of a line up of: Jareth, Space Ghost, The Punisher, Neo, and DARTH VADER! Jareth was called out OVER Darth… I was surprised =p

  47. str says:

When I was a child, David Bowie was the incarnation of evil to me! I was so scared of the Goblin King! I own it on DVD now and love it greatly, but I think I was as traumatized by the costume *coughcrotchcough* as anything else.
Only David Bowie could get away with that outfit. All of it.

  48. Count Blah says:

David Bowie’s crotch in this movie is solely responsible for me hitting puberty. True story.

  49. Pamela says:

I always wanted to dance with the Goblin King. It disappoints me that my boyfriend doesn’t like Labyrinth. In his defense, though, there are an awful lot of gratuitous David Bowie crotch-shots for a 21 year-old straight male. He didn’t watch it until he was in college.

    • fvzappa says:

I own a custom-made Labyrinth/ Bowie outfit. It’s the outfit that Bowie wears when he sets the clock ahead one hour, & also is the scene where he gives Hoggle the peach. Anyhow… you are welcome to dance with me anytime!

  50. hameltoe says:

Legend, The Dark Crystal, The Never Ending Story, and Labrynth are classics…

I miss the days when TV movies weren’t so common and video rentals were rare, and then your mother brings home one of these classics…

Rarely get that feeling, except when my fiancee comes in with a new pack of condoms… woot woot

  51. The Crapture says:

My inner drama-nerd will never let me NOT love this movie…I was about 14 or so when i first saw it back in the 80’s…so i was at just the right age to have a huge crush on Jennifer Connelly in this movie and on Mia Sara in that other great under-appreciated 80’s flick “Legend”…someone needs to submit that one here too…Between Bowie’s Jareth and Tim Curry’s Lord of Darkness, i learned almost everything i know about how to remain charming and personable even when being a cruel bastard…

    • Brittani says:

I just watched this movie the other day for the first time. I thought I would like it because I like Neverending Story, and alot of other fantasy movies. I did not like it though. I guess I’m weird, but I was really disappointed that the goblin king went away. If I was her, I would have asked him if he wanted a Goblin Queen. Also, no matter how many times I had to babysit, I would not have wished for him to be taken away. I’m in for some critism, i know. lol

    • Allison says:

Legend was sooo good! The girl, the unicorn (sigh)
That big red Devil always made me cry! He was so scary!
(and yes, I’ll ruin it all by saying Tom Cruise was hot in his pre-Scientology days)

      • FB says:

Ngh… I’m afriad that Tom Cruise made Legend unwatchable for me (the ~teeth~ *shudder*). I couldn’t even watch it for long enough to see the villain…

Labyrinth, I enjoyed. White-haired pretty-boy villains are my favorite ^_^

  52. Sarah says:

The Goblin king’s affection was wasted on her! It seems as if there are a lot of us commenting her who would have been his Queen in a heartbeat!

  53. niche says:

Whenever my nieces or nephews are bad I tell them to be good or the goblins will come take them away.
I’m pretty sure this is bad for them, but oh well!
Also: Definitely naming any son of mine Jareth.

  54. Yes, Bowie was wonderful, but I loved the world and creatures that Brian Froud designed and Jim Hensen brought to life.

  55. soulcrusher says:

So I am the only one who does not like avid Bowie then?

  56. Tana says:

I actually never watched this movie when I was little.
But I watched it in November and I loved it. Even though I’m 17.

  57. Xavier says:

Fortunately for me, I saw this farily young, thanks to my brother and my mum, who both loved this movie. Unfortunately for me, my mum was so in love with the movie, my middle name is Jareth, thanks to Bowie. I’m 18 and this is most definitly one of the no. 1 childhood films of mine, alongside Willow, The Dark Crystal and the Princess Bride.

  58. crunt says:

so, it came out 4 years before I was born…but I have the VHS, DVD, 2 collectors DVDs and 2 soundtracks…..I love it so much =]

  59. otisbdriftwood says:

What fruit do I have to eat to dance with Jennifer Connelly (preferably horizontally)

  60. Scarydragonlady says:

Oh man, I loved this movie, DESPITE the fact that I first watched it with a bad case of the stomach flu! Heh.

At the time, I was too young to be thinking of Jareth as smokin’ hot, so I can’t count myself among the people who became Bowie fans from this movie. Still undoubtedly one of my favorite childhood films, though.

…Damn, I need to watch it again.

  61. Riss says:

This was out before my time, but I still grew up on it and “The Dark Crystal”.
I just watched “Labyrinth” again, and it’s only now that I really appreciate the music… And Bowie. <3

I’m extremely excited to see “The Dark Crystal” again. I really must purchase these films.

  62. Mixy says:

This movie was the coolest thing out when I was a kid, I had the hugest crush on The Goblin King. Don’t think its gone yet either <3

  63. Max says:

    YES! LABYRINTH! MAGIC DANCE!

  64. DethRose says:

BEST MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It has the best music, sexiest star, annoying girl and funky puppets. I watch this movie EVERY day. Yeah, I’m beyond obsessed, who cares. I first saw it with my aunt. For a while I borrowed her DVD, then I gave it back. Then I decided I couldn’t live with out it ad bought my own. Oh! last week, I went to a pawn shop, and I found the tape! Next I hope the album.

  65. Morna says:

Only good thing about this movie was david bowie in tight pants.

  66. Sparkina says:

A classic! Right up there with the Neverending Story with the added bonus of plenty-of-sexy David Bowie, who I think is sexy here for reasons much higher than his “lowers” — his voice (music and speech), his hair, his face, his dancing.

  67. Onasariel says:

    Best movie EVER

  68. Meg-Meg says:

I actually WANT to dance with him. GIMME THAT FRUIT.
David Bowie + Tights = Smexiness (although he’s a bit old now XD)

  69. Caitlyn says:

I wasn’t born in the 80’s & only found out about this movie a few years ago actually, it is now my fave & I adore it. I even had As The World Falls Down as my song for my high school prom this year! ^_^ … no I didn’t have the puffy dress & fluffy hair :P

  70. Cole says:

I had a total squee-fest when my mom bought me the sound track for this movie for my sixteenth birthday. Took her a long time to find it but I’m pretty sure my reaction made it totally worth it.

    • Nikki says:

I LOVED this movie growing up, and I still do! I actually have it on DVD now and still watch it.

Me and my cousin would watch this, the Dark Crystal, and The Neverending Story everytime we could.
I guess that’s what led to the after dark trampoline bouncing fests while singing “Jump Magic Jump” until our voices would crack.

  71. dukethepcdr says:

Forget David Bowie. The puppeteering in that movie was out of sight! This movie was made during the golden age of puppets when they were in the funniest show on TV (The Muppet Show) and in great movies like Dark Crystal and the Muppets movies. All this stuff of making talking animals and monsters with computer graphics these days has made puppeteering almost a lost art.

    Bring back the Muppet Show!!

  72. Amanda says:

this movie is freakin awsome! i have it on my ipod and David Bowie is so freakin hot!!!! im only 14 and i absoultely love this movie!

  73. Kendra says:

Ah, memories. I still own a VHS version. This movie along with Legend, The Dark Crystal, The Neverending Story – while not ‘family films’ Conan the Barbarian, The Beastmaster and Krull also influenced me A LOT!

  74. llc says:

    BAD movie. very bad movie.

  75. Schweggy says:

I’m STILL get high to this movie. It really is that much more hardcore when you’re out of your mind. I go to bed with the ballroom scene in my noodle.

Or I think of the Disney “Tarzan” movie and footboarding on the trees.

Anyway, Bowie Bulge is epic. Ludo is creepy and forever will be creepy. And even my cats watch this movie.
