Epic Win: The Legend of Zelda

Submitted by T Wolfwind

Here’s the opening sequence and theme music from the game. I have it on good authority that the music for this game was ahead of its time in terms of complexity:

Legions of fanboys verge on nuclear meltdown because this IS NOT REAL:

Game cases and a whole lotta bling after the jump.

The original:

ebayzelda

Twilight Princess:

the-legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess-45778440020

Windwaker:

Ocarina of Time:

ocarinaoftime

And then there’s this, which isn’t the game–it’s a Wii case–but anyone who takes the time to glue eleventy billion Swarovski Crystals to the case get two thumbs up and a big “Ooooooooooo, sparkly!” from me.

» 83 Blasts From The Past

  1. nightlyeclipse says:

I kicked ass at this game!

  2. Sample says:

Although the N64’s Ocarina of Time was good the SNES version A Link To The Past is the purest form of WIN for this series.

I has them all – included the out-dated consoles to play them on, think I play the first one again tonight on the ol’ snes :D

    • Jim says:

I’m going to have to agree. The original 8 bit games *made* the series, but I think Link to the Past is the best of the lot. Zelda is probably the best series of all time IMHO.

      • Tyler says:

The best series of all time? Screw that. The Elder Scrolls games are infinitely better than frickin’ Zelda. At least, for my taste in games anyway. I prefer fantasy games that don’t involve cute, green-clad elves who are taken this seriously.

        • Shisno says:

Then your taste in video games fails.

        • Min says:

I don’t want my video games to be serious. I want them to be /fun/. That seems to be something you have neglected to consider.

        • TiM says:

you suck dude…Elder scrolls was great…but Zelda was soo much better so you should go die as the failure you are….

        • Dynamicchaossystem says:

I think Oblivion is amazing, and Morrowind was pretty good. But really when I think Elder Scrolls, those are the only two that come to mind. When I think of Zelda I think of at least five really cool games. Even if they are a bit childish.

    • Eroy says:

I was thinking the same thing. Time to dust off the old NES. :D

    • Calilac says:

I cried when my console died. Considered making it into a lunch box but that felt too much like cannibalizing a family member. I miss it still.

  3. Tick says:

    Best Game Ever !!!!!!
I still play this game sometimes.

  4. Phaelin says:

I wish that trailer was for real. :<

    • Sprite101 says:

What are you serious? I was in near meltdown because I did think it was real.

Legend of Zelda does not work, and will never work, as a feature film. Most videogames don’t. In this case you have a main character who never speaks, and who’s only conflict is courage. The only way to make that work on screen is to throw that annoying faery up there with him, or give him some other obnoxious sidekick that you want to kill 10 minutes into the movie.

Besides, you saw what happened to Mario Bros.

      • Border Count says:

I disagree. I have said for years that Zelda would make an awesome movie. It’s too hard to screw up the plot or characters, especially Link (if you take out the option for character development, you can’t fail). You wouldn’t have to spend time doing anything convoluted to the story (Super Mario Brothers, FF: Spirits Within). A boy, a sword, and a big scary guy whose ass needs to be kicked. What more do you really need from Zelda?

    • Link says:

      Well exuuuuse me princess
      (heh zelda show humor)

  5. Arkain says:

Zelda = Best win of all time.

  6. 21skulls says:

Wow i LOVE Zelda…… Best. Game. Ever.

  7. Jorge Gonzalez says:

    “Windwalker”?

    • Max says:

No, that’s the Wind Waker, it was actually a somewhat good game, it was about a boy who lived on an island where they worship the hero of time, therefore he wears the hero’s clothes on his birthday, however his sister gets kidnapped on that day and has to sail away with pirates to go to the fortress to get his sister, however they catch him and they meet :O Gannon there, however Gannon sees no threat and casts him out of the fortress, he then goes to get the master sword but it has been depowered so you fix it, then you have to find the triforce pieces, which takes lots of time and money to get the maps to the pieces deciphered (Darn you Tingle, cheapskate) then going to go find the triforce pieces then fighting gannon, and if you took the time to read all of this, i congratulate you

      • Max says:

Also, Link has the power to control the wind in this one. hence the name: WindWaker

        • jjmblue7 says:

If by “it was actually a somewhat good game” you mean it is the best in the Zelda series, then yes, you are correct. It’s way better than Ocarina of Time, IMO, and the style worked EXTREMELY well with the plot and characterization of the story, despite the fact that many people (myself included :P ) originally were angry about not being uber-realistic but cartoony instead. Just go into the Hyrule Castle basement and look at the stained-glass windows of the OoT sages = EPIC WIN. Oh, let’s not forget the amazing sountrack, with the sailing theme, Earth God’s Lyric, Wind God’s Aria, and Great Fairy Queen’s theme.

  8. Shikyo says:

I don’t normally comment on anything but I have to with this. I don’t have the money to have all of them, and I didn’t get started early enough to get the orginals…but I agree that Zelda is THE Win of all time…I love my games that I do have…but the DS version, The PHantom Hourglass can go and die…at least mine can…

anyway love the game…this is my comment, ^^ epic win of luffleness

  9. Bellesouth says:

    Ocarina of Time. *drooool*

That music. Just stays with you. Forever and ever and ever. Oh man. Link. Link is awesome.

    • Wes says:

I can hear the Bolero of Fire and Saria’s Melody running through my head right now. Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time are in the top 5 games of all time as far as I’m concerned. The only one I never liked was Majora’s Mask. I’m gonna fire up some Zelda when I get home tonight….

  10. Bill Gama says:

I want SO MUCH to believe on that trailer, please, let me fool myself that this is real! >_<

  11. Apil says:

Ahhh, Zelda — only the best thing ever :) Especially if you were there before the pre-64 era.

  12. Kittah Noir says:

    *sigh*

Now I’m going to waste all my Xmas holidays re-playing Ocarina of Time.

I was a Sega girl before that, so missed out on the original goodnesses, woe is me!

Oh yes, I can definitely see pre-last-gen console parties in the future…

You’d think from the way the fan boys and fan girlies went mental over the trailer, that they’d actually make it.

  13. Frank says:

Twilight Princess= WIN. Even more so than Ocarina of Time. Nevermind that it was a wee (pun NOT intended) easy, its storytelling was superior.

    • toastbusterz says:

Easy? I got stuck in the first dungeon because it was NOT explained that you could jump while carrying the Bombling! The final fight with Ganon was by far the easiest fight with Ganon I ever had, though. Ganon was hard in LttP, but I only played the version that they rereleased for GBA. The original for SNES may have been easier or harder. I STILL can’t beat him in OoT! Reflecting his magic is SO much easier in TP…

    • Anonymous says:

WTF Twilight princess NEVER COULD DEFEAT TLOZ: OoT

TP was too easy a one-handed kid can complete it!

  14. slythwolf says:

Those are much less likely to be Swarovski crystals than they are those little kits of rhinestone things that you can stick onto cell phones, iPods and stuff.

  15. MettanAtem says:

I continue to play this game on my Gamecube with Legend of Zelda: Collector’s Edition (4 games in 1!). Unfortunately, I just can’t get past the fifth or sixth dungeon (can’t remember which).

  16. Frank says:

I never got the Collector’s Edition. I had the original on GBA (Classic NES Series), but I lost it a while ago :(

I still think that, thought the 2D games were good, 3D was the best thing ever to happen to the Zelda franchise.

Those who try to include those awful CD-i games among this franchise shall be disowned (JK. I never played them, and I’m glad for it).

  17. Frank says:

Sorry for the double post, but I’ sure everyone here knows that you can skip straight to the Second Quest in the original by entering ZELDA as a name when you start a game.

  18. Dana says:

You don’t have to buy the original anymore. I have it installed on my laptop. You can download it free. The site I got it from also has the walkthrough and an ASCII map in case you don’t remember where to find stuff. If you still have the original game manual and maps, that’s even better. Google for “classic Zelda” and I think the site I visited is first in the results.

  19. Me says:

Why does everyone love Zelda so much? It sucks.

    • slkfjdsokf says:

i hope you dont sincerely mean that…and if you do im pretty sure thats a sin lol……u obviously are a video game person……

    • Fragnox says:

Probably because it’s actually an awesome series and you’re some sort of biased anti-Zelda person?

  20. Frank says:

That, friend, is a matter of opinion. This is for those who hold the series in high regard.

And, in response to Dana’s post, I have been introduced to emulation… I just haven’t found an NES emulator to play the original Zelda (or, maybe, Zelda II) on my PC.

  21. Mel says:

They really REALLY need to make a movie using the actors from this trailer (although Gannon, Link’s ears, and his silly hat need a little work). That would rule.

    • Calilac says:

No. The actor they picked for Link isn’t girlie enough in the face. He fails as Link. Although I can’t think of anyone who would fit better either…

  22. Kittah! says:

    Greatest win of all time!
    Zelda = best series
    OOT = best!

And why isn’t that movie real? It looks better than half… no wait, ALL of the crap Hollywood is spewing out these days.

    High School Musical, anyone?

  23. Chordus says:

I think it was a good game, but when I think of “blast from the past,” I think of something that I can still enjoy, and this doesn’t qualify. I still love the Muppets. I would love to have Fun Dip again. I wouldn’t even mind getting on a Big Wheel one more time. But I’ve tried playing Zelda recently, and it just doesn’t cut it any more. The newer Zelda games are just better, plain and simple.

  24. AngelMax says:

They definitely could have picked an actor who looked more like Link, maybe one with a slightly smaller… creep factor.
When I first saw Ocarina of Time Link, I thought, “He looks kinda like Taylor Hanson.”
*squeals and ducks as ignorant people pelt her with rotten tomatoes*

  25. pointman says:

hum….ok, didn’t show up the first time, so, here it is again.

Click on my name to get taken to Armageddon games where you can download the original version of LOZ and an quest editor to make your own games. fun!

  26. Lancer873 says:

Did you know: The theme song to Zelda is a very much modified version of a song called Peacemaker? I played it in concert band not too long ago and the first time we played it I just thought “OMG!!! THIS IS FROM LEGEND OF ZELDA!!!”

  27. Admiral Memo says:

Give. Me. The. Freaking. Movie. Already.

  28. Dexaan says:

Meh. Zelda 2 doesn’t get decent until you get the downstab attack to make fights easier. The game is probably the toughest Zelda though.

  29. funnyman876 says:

I remeber the new one on ds…. or was it link? I don`t know. :S.

  30. Nick says:

It’s probably already been said, but truthfully all fanboys including me breathed a sigh of relief that the movie trailer was a fake. That trailer showed signs of epic failure.

  31. otisbdriftwood says:

Oh how pissed I was to know that the movie wasn’t real that has to be by far the cruelest joke I have ever seen. I would probably be less mad if someone tricked me into thinking my parents died in a plane crash.

    • sreya Talasila says:

Sadly, I agree. I believed this was real just now, even though it’s clearly stated above the video that it is not. In capitol letters too. Oh, how badly I want it to be true…

  32. brandon says:

OoT became my substitute for food and water when I got it for Christmas. The only addiction comparable to playing that game in my life … is rated NC-17. OoT = EPIC … been around since the beginning of the series, with the NES 1&2 and then A Link to the Past and the underrated (IMO) Like’s Awakening.

  33. dingo says:

God bless the Wii and the virtual console.

  34. Taross says:

I still have the gold cassette… Gods, the memories…

  35. 'donis says:

I PLAYED AND BEAT EVERY SINGLE ZELDA GAME because i have no life… BUT THEY ARE THE BEST GAMES

  36. Shadsie says:

I was trying to show off an Etch A Sketch image I did of Link (Twilight Princess version) over on the Etch-A-Sketch WIN, but my posts kept getting eaten by a lurking Moblin. (I guess Nostalgic Win doesn’t like outside links? or Deviant Art? Anyway)…

Since were getting into nostalgia here… the original game – man, got that as a birthday present with my NES system when I was 10. Oh, how many hours of my young life I spent in front of that game! My sister and her boyfriend (now brother in law) would play and we’d all sit around deciding where whichever one of us was playing should go next, making a group effort. My bro-in-law created this huge map of Hyryle by going screen to screen and meticulously drawing everything down…

A gift from my significant other on my 29th birthday of a GameCube and Twilight Princess brought me back to the WIN that is Zelda. I’ve been getting and borrowing so many of the games and the obession’s back and full on now.

And that cute little 8-bit game started it all.

  37. shruthi says:

    Hi,
This is a very good game and interesting game I still have the gold cassette… Gods, the memories of this game and you can play the free online without registered and error free.

  38. Sarhii says:

this was one of the few nintendo games we had growing up and I was suprised to find out that my husband (who has played and beat every Zelda game there is several times) didn’t know about 90% of the secret bomb or burn places.

  39. Robin says:

Was the best most awesome series ever. I remember watching my dad play it when I was younger and couldn’t really do all the gaming stuff. I play my Zelda edition DS Lite all the time. Makes me really wish that my cuz didn’t lose/sell my old system. Got to find another one. :)

  40. LilithDrasier says:

the origional Zelda, the origional Final Fantasy, and the origional Castlevania… the three best games on NES. Three of the best games period in my opinion. Granted I love playing the newer ones as well. But those three…..

    EPIC NOSTALGIC WIN!

  41. Irony says:

You’re all wrong.. OOT was a good game, but LoZ: Link’s Awakening (Original Game Boy) was the best of the series. I have all of them, and the systems to play them as well.

  42. llc says:

i played logan’s run, not the zelda game.

  43. Nyxie says:

I fangirled so hard over that trailer. I almost cried that it isn’t real. Hollywood needs to make that. Now.

  44. alucard048 says:

    has anyone seen this?

  45. Hey hey listen says:

It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this!

  46. Absolutely legend game!!! Had almost forgotten about Zelda!!
