Epic Win: Sit-n-Spin

win-pictures-sitnspin

Submitted by Shaina

Why do they keep messing with the original? Apparently, some marketers are trying too hard to sell this awesome classic toy. Based on the product images below, here’s what Once Upon A Win concluded as the true intent of these toys:

shakenspin

The Shaken-Baby-Syndrome-n-Spin (yes, we just crossed that line. Handbasket, us, helll.)

WTF does Spiderman have to do with sitting and spinning? The Crappy Movie Tie-n-Spin. Does this shoot out webbing when you spin on it? It better.

51pg85yemfl_sl160_aa160_

The Sit-n-Crack-Yer-Hed. Let’s see, unstable base + overly sugared kids = ER anyone? (I think this is last year’s unsold snow sleds just re-badged. Nice. Marketing win. I suppose.)

  1. Grrr says:

I used to love these things! Wth is the last picture though? It looks like a giant cereal bowl or something…

  2. Qwepir says:

I had one of these. I spun for like, 10 minutes straight, and threw up. While spinning.

    • smackymcgee says:

I’m sure you weren’t the only one. I know I got on one when I was too big for it and spun myself right off it again. I’m sharing embarrassing secrets with you people!

    • alex says:

Threw up while spinning? Sounds like a mess!

    • Grevus says:

I diid that as well, save for the throwing up bit. Your story reminds me of the time I hate…8 eggs in one breakfast. I was sent home after 15 minutes, and puked toughly twelve times on my bedroom floor, once twice in my mom’s bedroom and once in the bathroom. Yeah, basic logic fail.

  3. Musicmom870 says:

I love the original, but I have to tell you that the oversized bowl is really useful, too, when supervised. Some kids need to strengthen their core muscles, and it’s good for therapy for some kids with sensory integration issues. See link for some other neat stuff.

    • Motas says:

From personal experience (2 ADHD kids): if you keep ‘em on the floor (as pictured) there won’t be too much blood.

  4. Tick says:

OMG these were so fun !!! Loved them !!!

  5. NvrGro'nUp says:

I remember when I went to daycare they had two of them.. I always wanted to get into the closet where they were.. I guess they were afraid they’d make us all sick if we played on them too long.. Stupid forbidden closet!

  6. DigitalBenjamin says:

Did anyone else try and use these while standing? So fun and yet so dangerous.

    • BashfulMuse says:

I LOVED my Sit n Spin when I was a kid. So much so, that I bought one for my 3 year old recently. The thing was a piece of crap! The plastic that they used was so flimsy, I don’t think that it would have taken very long before it was broken. We got rid of it.

      • GlitterGirl123 says:

My sister and I used to both sit on the original one. We’d be opposite each other with our legs strainght out and crossing each other. We did this into our early elementary years. It was made out of sturdy, blue plastic.

We, too, recently bought one for our kids (3 and 4). It is so cheap. The plastic is so flimsy that it contorts and you end up with all types of weird friction that stops you from spinning quickly. Even the middle part that you grip to spin is junk. The section that connects the grip part to the seat part is so flimsy that it actually twists. There is no way one kid can enjoy the lack-lustre version of today; let alone two.

I’m totally bummed and wish I could get my hands on one of the vintage versions.

    • Buddy Girl says:

Didn’t everyone? I know I did. Used to dance the “Twist” on it too. “Look, no hands … ” CRASH.

  7. Man, I totally puked on one of those when I was 4!

    • Emilikah says:

they one of those things at the bottom at primary school, and it’s huge. 3 kids could get in it. my daughter is in an early intervention class, and that’s where I’ve seen it, so maybe it is for co-ordination and muscle-tone etc. Didn’t see any kids get hurt on it :) as for the others, I’ve never seen them.

  8. Salty Sack says:

    Sit-n-Win

  9. utaduta says:

i loved mine. i stood and spun on it all the time. i got one for my kids. i wish they had adult sized ones. that would be awesome.

    • MinisterofSilly says:

Oh man, that would be hilarious. Of course, now that I’m older, I’d prolly barf. :(

      • MarthaK says:

They have a stand version of it, it’s like a metal pole, coming out of the ground. It’s got a circular part you stand on and two handles. You stand on it and just by your own sheer weight if you tilt backwards you can go pretty damned fast.

  10. fizzle says:

    Nostalgic Win finally won!
I loved these things when I was little! I used to hit the other kids to make them get off so I could play on ‘em.

  11. Sarah says:

Haha, I loved these. My friend had one. I used it every time I went over until I got too big for it. T_T

  12. D.R. says:

My brother used to have one of those. He would spin on it. Then he would stagger off and fall down.

  13. John M. Hanna says:

Before we could get drugs and alcohol, Sit-n-Spin was the next best thing to getting f’ed up.

  14. blackcat says:

Our older son would spin around on that thing for hours at a time while listening to Kenny Rogers songs. One led to the other, but I don’t know which was cause and which was effect.

  15. Bandai says:

The family I live with has one that talks and tells the kid which direction to spin. One, it’s creepy because it has this big face that you wrap your legs around. Two, what child is going to listen to the ‘orders’ it spouts (even if they do know the difference between left and right).

  16. pezcore says:

    Dear sweet jebus: The sit-n-spin.
My parents wouldn’t let me have one when I was little because they were convinced I would hurt myself…but my childhood best friend had one. When we were 6, we’d steal all the pillows in her house, cover the wall behind the sit-n-spin, then let go thus flying into the wall of pillows…which worked out great when you actually hit the wall of pillows. This might explain why I have migraines. She also had one of those horses that you could bounce on-another toy my parents wouldn’t let me have because they were convinced I’d hurt myself…I busted my nose open when I bounced far to epic.
Sit-n-spin: the greatest thing in the history of ever. If they made them in adult sizes: I’d buy one.

  17. Cecona says:

Aaah, the sit-n-spin. we had one of these when me and my sister were babies. We would fight over it all the time, even tried sittng on it at the same time. She usually won though. I won once, but only because she ‘fell’. The victory wasnt long lived however as she had to be taken to the hospital for stitches.

  18. mojojojo says:

My BF and I saw one at Target a couple weeks ago…if that thing hadn’t been tied in the box… to hell if we’re too big, we’d figure a way…

    • pezcore says:

If you take turns and sit cross legged with the wheel in the center of said legs-you won’t even topple. You’ll still feel the rush of wind/fun/nauesa.

  19. Xotik says:

BAHAHAHA i still have mine! xD i never had a yellow one, but i have a broken red one and a working blue one *dances*

  20. Victor says:

My little bro used to just spin in place when he was a kid, so he got one for Christmas. Used to spin on it for hours. Now he’s a network admin, and I’m just a wrench.

  21. Decepticon Rhinox says:

Well… Spin is dutch for Spider.

  22. hope says:

i found one at a goodwill store near where i live 2 days ago and i picked it up for my two kids. my daughter has a blast on it! lol i even got on it for a bit! love it!!!

  23. Roachella says:

Woot! Oh man, when I was a kid- we’d go dumpster diving. You’d climb into the big huge dumpsters and see what treasures people had thrown away. My two older brothers and I did this one summer afternoon, and low and behold- we found a Sit N Spin!! We put it on the middle of the road and rode it until cars came. Good memory!!! Win!!

  24. TJ says:

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVED Sit N Spin! I had a blue one & was so bummed when I had grown too big for it. I’m still bummed! :(

  25. Blenheimears says:

I had one of these. Yes, the original. I tried it once, got dizzy, collapsed on the floor, and never touched it again.

    • Rena says:

The dizzy collapsing was half the fun!!! Yes, it was fun to subject ourselves to that back then… no one cared! You puked, and got right back on.

  26. Lisa says:

The Sit N Spins they make now suck. I seriously think they are made such that a kid can’t go fast. What the hell’s the point, then??

  27. Tiffany says:

My great-grandfather invented this. What a wonderful EPIC win….and the batteries never have to be replaced!

  28. jaw says:

ahhh the old sit and puke, i remember those days…

  29. seken says:

I still remember the day I first threw up on one of these things….20 minute session for the loss

  30. Rena says:

OH GOD YES! Total win!!!! I remember this one song that was like Michael Finnegan only the lyrics were something like spin and spin and spin… AGAIN! Annoyed the crap out of my parents, betweeen me spinning and singing at the top of my lungs!

  31. Kelly says:

There used to be a big version of this at McDonald’s but I haven’t seen one in a long time.

  32. Dixiejet says:

I bought my kids one back in ‘79 and they LOVED it ! It was handed down to the granddaughter and now I dunno where it is. :o ( I got on it back then too…I was only about 115 lbs so it worked for me too ! lol ! Good times….. ;o)

  33. rickybobby says:

Also known as the Whirl and Hurl

  34. llc says:

this toy was out of control!
