so cool…that they were banned from school.
i guess that makes them truly too cool for school.
It probably didn’t help that we were all using them as catapults during class.
LOL
No kidding! I remember the letter they put out to parents urging them to restrain their kids to stop bringing them to class…. Eventually, kids were receiving detention for disruption of class…
Never give a nervous OCD kid a slap bracelet.
Remember: “They’ll slit your wrists!” Haha. Emo kids would love these. Do I sense a retro-comeback?
They got banned from my school too. It was so sad because, well, most of my accessories were of the slap variety.
That is the creepiest hand ever in the video.
yeah – i didn’t even notice the bracelet for the crypt keeper hand
I know, freaky
I didn’t know Skeletor wore slap bracelets!
I can’t bring myself to even click the video because of it. Disturbing.
freakishly long creepy fingers… *shudders*
I think I had about 10 of those to coordinate with those buckles for your t shirts. You know, instead of tying a knot on the side of them? Oh yeah, I was the pinnacle of fashion back then. *cringes slightly at memory*
Dear God, thats the strangest hand I have ever seen in that vid!
Is that Buckethead’s hand in that video?! O.o
I’m pretty sure I still have a couple of those… but yea…. school decided they were weapons….
Jewelry with metal spikes was also considered a weapon. Crazy the things schools ban.
(my school also banned soda but thats irrelevant to the topic)
My school banned TOUCHING members of the opposite sex.
Catholic school?
What about teh gay kids?
lol
Hermaphrodites, of course, got away with murder….
If you watched the video, how many of you even noticed the slap bracelett, or were you all staring at the really really insanely creepy hand?
I still HAVE some of these! Mine are animal print. I have leopard, zebra and tiger.
Neener
I think that may be Leonard Nimoy’s arm. Not sure.
Blarg, I hated those things. And that hand is freaking creepy.
E-gad! those things!
I tore one apart, turns out is about a 10 inch segment of a tape measure with the ends rounded off…
I tried to use it as a catapult after doing that, and I failed.
Slapped the end, and it circled up, causing the other end (they’re pretty sharp actually) to cut through the skin/flesh of my left ring finger and cut me *almost* down to the bone..
bled for almost 3 days, still have the scar…
Yikes! Yeah, those things can hurt. I remember when they were banned, too… maybe that’s why, lol.
ya, hate to see what it could do to my wrist…
I had one or two. It seems like they were taken off the market pretty quickly, though it doesn’t look like it was because of regulations. The cloth covering would wear off and a metal edge would show. It wasn’t cut from a tape measure though. If the metal edge wasn’t dulled then it can be very dangerous, dulled, it would only be dangerous.
Taken off the market?? They still sell these…
lol!
i still have mine!!!
i never use them though
AHH! Slap bracelets!! Loved them! I’d used to slap people in the head with mine. HAHA
I think these were banned worldwide! my school in australia banned them too. the rumour about the slit wrist also circulated in my town, but i think that just made them more exciting.
i just remember they freaking hurt to put on, especially the cheap ones with the wire poking out the end!

I’m pretty sure in Australia these were known as Slap Bands, to rid them of the girly bracelet stigma…
Those are still available here, but not as bracelets. You can get them as reflex bands, to use on arms or legs. Quite handy, in fact.
.
Actually, I can’t really remember them ever having been a trend as bracelets here (Sweden).
We had a few of these at a bike shop I worked at, for keeping your pants from getting shredded. At least, that’s what we used them for. Who has the weirdest use for one of these?
Circumcision.
See above post for ULTIMATE WIN.
They are back now. I teach third grade and this week we had a book fair that sold them. I confiscated about 10 of them from students playing with them during work time.
I had a few of these. They hurt sometimes. Loved ‘em though.
Man, I used to wear my slap braclets with my Skidz pants and my hypercolor shirts (and sometimes by body glove shirts too!).
Factoid: You could also use a pair of slap bracelets as hair ornaments–made getting your hair into a bun pretty simple, and it’d stay fixed.
My mom never bought me any trend while it was still trendy. She only got me stuff like that after the fad was done and the discount stores sold it cheap.
My slap bracelet she found on the counter at the post office!
Man, I was such a nerd!
Did anyone else used to see how many you could snap at once? Line three or four of them balanced open on your wrist, then try to snap them all on at once in one toss?
I used to do it with both arms, three up each arm.
What about pogs? I’m not clever enough to create a post worthy but I feel pogs deserve a win.
They still sell these, just more advanced versions that don’t work quite so well. I got a slap bracelet gift card.
I have 2 slap bracelet WATCHES, one red and one brown, because I am too cool for school (mostly just too old, but whatever).
Tehe, I used to have one. I ended up taking it apart. Just a tape measure, psh.
But still, they were cool
I seem to remember these being banned around my place due to the fact that they would introduce the chilluns to the wonderful world of BDSM. Did I mention I was in kindergarten when these were cool? Way to sexualize children under the guise of protecting them, adults!
Also: how is it that I can go to Australia and frolic through a field of man-eating kangaroos (TRUE STORY)… but slap bracelets– that’s going too far? I used to think you were COOL, Australia!
Just one more way to annoy the teacher who thought classroom bullies could be used as bouncers.
My aunt (who is a mere 7 yrs. older than me), had these first… I saw how cool they were when she had them, so when mom took me to Eckerd one day, I saw this HUGE bin of them, and had to try one for myself. I uncoiled it, and got ready to slap it across my wrist… Made sure no one was looking… And *SLAP*. OWWWWW! True to the myth, I actually slit my wrist with one of these things. The metal slid out of the fabric, and there I stood, screaming and bleeding all over the place in the middle of Eckerd.
I remember my mom rushing me to the bathroom, and then rushing home to call my grandma to tell her to confiscate my aunt’s slap bracelets. I’m pretty sure this was when she started refering to me as her “stupid niece.” LOL
i had a watch slap bracelet. i loved to put it on my friends over and over and over and over…..
never heard of these things, maybe i’m glad that this is the first time i’ve heard of them.
I remember everyone at my school had this except me.
