Chinese symbol? Red suit? I think that obviously indicates he was supposed to represent a liberal American educator trying out the “super power” of Communism – and illustrating the bumps and mistakes he would make without the aid of the “instruction book” – obviously a stand-in for Mao’s Red Book

So, we used to play this dungeons and dragon’s style game, but with superheroes. I think it was called Champions… so, I made a character that assumed that the intended recipient of the suit (it was supposed to be another FBI agent, Robert Culps partner) actually got it, and actually learned how to use the suit correctly… it was alot of fun, but other players complained that it was far too powerful…

I had the same problem with knowing the theme song but having no recollection of the show. I wasn’t intoxicated or anything, though; I was between one and three years old when this was on.

Actually, the symbol is similar to a Chinese character for “middle” or “center.” China called itself Middle Kingdom (although a better translation would be Central Kingdom as they saw themselves as the center and best of all kingdom and cultures). Whether the show creator meant it as such, I don’t know. The symbol also looks alot like a stylized version of an open book with a pencil in the middle and it is somewhat fitting as the character was a teacher.

I don’t recall this show ever going into syndication!
The big question is WHY NOT.
SciFi keeps running these crappy short lived shows from
the 90’s & early 2000’s.

I loved this show, I loved the theme song, and I LOVED his curly hair!! I also remember they couldn’t say his character’s name for a few weeks because the guy who shot President Reagan was named John Hinkley, so every time one of his students said “Mr. Hinkley” they dubbed it with “Mr. Hanley.”

being from this show! Methinks I was under the influence quite a bit

The best part about Greatest American Hero was the stunt double.

You’d see William Katt running toward a giant rock and suddenly replaced by some moustached, brawny Italian dude in a curly blonde wig.

I got my first kiss at summer camp in 1983 (thrid grade for me) during the change of the reels at a showing of the pilot as the movie. His name was Jimmy. He fake fainting and patted his chest after the kiss. LOL! I have no idea what happened to him in life.

I love this show so much that I bought the 1st season on DVD for me AND my dad, who also loved it back then. My favorite was that he couldn’t figure out how to land and he “landed” in a dumpster once. Hillarious!

WOW! What a blast! I have had that song in my head for about a week now. I couldn’t remember the name of the show but, the song has been with me for a while. I loved it then and wish it was still on. It was one of the good shows. Not a lot of violence, no swearing and no nudity. Awesome!

They gave him an instruction book, but he lost it. In a later episode, they gave him another one. He used it to shrink down to the size of an insect while holding the book. But when he grew back to normal size, he forgot to hold onto the book.
